CarDekho
CarDekho runs India's car marketplace plus Rupyy auto loans and InsuranceDekho insurance broking.
CarDekho's lending and insurance arms make money on their own, but the car-search traffic that built the brand is the part AI answer engines are learning to skip.
CarDekho is an Indian website where people buy and sell cars, and the company also makes money by lending money to buyers and selling insurance. The hard part is that Google, ChatGPT, and Perplexity can now answer car questions directly without sending people to CarDekho's website, which means fewer customers finding the site through search. CarDekho does own two regulated lending and insurance businesses that could make money on their own, but the real test is whether those businesses can grow without relying on the main website to send them customers.
Rupyy revenue growth continues at similar pace even if classifieds traffic flattens or declines. Would show fintech arm can compound independent of the AI-threatened discovery funnel.
InsuranceDekho carve-out DRHP filed by end-Sept 2026 with its own valuation. Would clarify whether investors value the fintech arms above the eroding classifieds core.
- Group revenue ₹2,795 crore FY25, up 24% YoY
- Rupyy disbursed ~₹16,000 crore in loans FY25
- IPO target valuation ₹13,000-15,000 crore
- AI answer engines eroding organic search traffic that feeds CarDekho's lead-gen funnel.
- Crowded IPO queue among Cars24, Spinny and CarDekho pressuring valuation and pricing.
- Group remains loss-making at consolidated level (Rs 266 crore FY25 net loss).
- Trails Cars24 and Spinny in used-car revenue leadership, limiting pricing power.
- History of costly retail execution missteps, e.g. 2023 retail used-car exit losses per vehicle.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Cars24 | losing to | Cars24 led Indian used-car revenue at >Rs 5,500 crore vs CarDekho, per Entrackr, Apr 3, 2024 |
| Spinny | losing to | Ranked ahead of CarDekho in used-car revenue per Entrackr's Apr 3, 2024 report |
| CarTrade Tech | contesting | Held merger talks in 2025, abandoned Nov 2025, both remain independent IPO-bound rivals |
| Google AI Overviews / ChatGPT / Perplexity | losing to | Live disintermediation of car-search organic traffic as of Jun 2, 2026 reporting |
- Is CarDekho profitable in 2025?
- Not at the group level: CarDekho Group posted a consolidated net loss of ₹266 crore on revenue of ₹2,795 crore in FY25, per Entrackr, Dec 29, 2025. However, its standalone core classifieds-plus-financing business crossed ₹1,000 crore revenue and was profitable for two consecutive years.
- Has CarDekho had layoffs?
- Yes. CarDekho cut about 200 employees and imposed 12-22.5% pay cuts in May 2020 during COVID, per Entrackr. Further headcount reductions followed its 2023 exit from the loss-making retail used-car business. No confirmed large CarDekho-specific layoffs were reported for 2025-26 as of July 2026.
- Could AI replace CarDekho's core business?
- AI answer engines like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity already answer car-search, spec-comparison and price-discovery queries directly, threatening the organic traffic CarDekho's lead-gen funnel depends on (Digital Dealer, June 2, 2026). Its regulated Rupyy lending and InsuranceDekho broking arms are harder to replicate with AI alone.
- Who is CarDekho's biggest competitor?
- Cars24 leads India's used-car revenue at over ₹5,500 crore, ahead of both CarDekho and Spinny, per an Entrackr used-car startup report dated April 3, 2024. Listed rival CarTrade Tech also held, then abandoned, merger talks with CarDekho in late 2025.
- Who owns CarDekho?
- CarDekho is privately held under parent Girnar Software Pvt. Ltd., founded in 2008 by brothers Amit Jain and Anurag Jain, headquartered in Jaipur. Investors include LeapFrog Investments, Sequoia Capital India (Peak XV) and Sunley House Capital, since its $250M Series E round in October 2021 that valued it near $1.2 billion.
- Is CarDekho going public?
- Yes. Girnar Software, CarDekho's parent, is expected to confidentially file a DRHP with SEBI in Q3 2026 for a ₹3,000-3,500 crore IPO targeting a ₹13,000-15,000 crore valuation, per Economic Times, July 21, 2026. Sister company InsuranceDekho is pursuing a separate IPO with a DRHP targeted by end-September 2026.
