The call

Celestia built the pipes and got rollups to plug in, but almost nobody pays for the water, and Ethereum built its own cheaper pipes next door.

Celestia runs a live system that helps blockchains store data cheaply and securely. It already has over 100 blockchain projects using it and acquired Sovereign Labs to offer complete blockchain-building tools. However, Ethereum itself now offers similar data storage directly (through blobs), and a competitor called EigenDA has attracted billions in investor capital, both making Celestia easier to replace. The real test is whether Celestia can convert its Sovereign Labs purchase into paying customers who want a full custom blockchain service within the next six months, because right now the network only generates about eight dollars per day in fees while the token keeps losing value due to ongoing unlocks and has crashed 98 percent from its high.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents may become heavy users of blockchain data space, but no AI product currently threatens Celestia's business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Ethereum (EIP-4844 blobs, Danksharding roadmap) and EigenDA. Ethereum's own blob storage and EigenDA's ~$9B in restaked capital both offer rollups the same data storage Celestia sells, often cheaper. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Over 100 rollups already built their pipes to plug into Celestia, and switching that plumbing costs time and risk.
What would change this call
Whether Sovereign Labs deal yields disclosed paid enterprise contracts by 1Q27. Shows if the full-stack pivot produces real revenue, not just TIA grants.
Daily on-chain DA fee revenue trend versus the ~$8/day baseline. Indicates whether usage is translating into token value capture.
How TIA price and unlock absorption behave around the July 31, 2026 ~27M TIA unlock. Tests whether dilution overwhelms demand or market absorbs it.
Key numbers
  • Network earns just $8 per day in fees (2026-07-19)
  • TIA token down 98% from its peak price (2026-07-20)
  • Market cap sits at $338M despite tiny revenue (2026-07-21)
Named risks
  • Monthly TIA unlocks of ~27M tokens (~$9.7M) through 2027 create persistent dilution. Severity: high
  • DA fee capture near zero, ~$8/day, against $338M market cap shows weak monetization. Severity: high
  • Ethereum blobs and well-funded EigenDA push commodity DA pricing toward zero. Severity: medium
  • Sovereign Labs full-stack pivot unproven, no disclosed enterprise revenue yet. Severity: medium
  • CIP-31 deflationary tokenomics proposal remains speculative and unimplemented. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Celestia profitable in 2026?
No. On-chain data availability fee revenue is roughly $8 per day as of July 19, 2026, against a TIA market cap of about $338M on July 21, 2026, meaning the network captures almost no value despite usage growth.
Who owns Celestia?
Celestia is a decentralized, token-governed network, not a traditional company. Development is led by Celestia Labs and the Celestia Foundation, which together have raised roughly $155 to $158M in venture funding plus a $100M foundation raise in September 2024.
What is TIA worth right now?
TIA traded near $0.35 to $0.37 as of July 21, 2026, an all-time low, down about 98% from its peak and roughly 84% over the trailing year, per Coinbase and Ainvest data from July 2026.
Could AI replace Celestia?
No. Celestia's core function, decentralized consensus and data availability sampling secured by staked TIA, requires real economic security AI cannot replicate. Ancillary content like explainer articles is already AI-generated, but the validator network itself is not AI-replaceable.
Who is Celestia's biggest competitor?
Ethereum itself, via its native EIP-4844 blob feature shipped March 2024, directly competes for the same rollup data-availability spend. EigenDA, backed by roughly $9B in restaked capital as of April 2026, and Avail also contest the market.
What did Celestia acquire recently?
On July 15, 2026, Celestia Labs acquired Sovereign Labs, maker of the Sovereign SDK, adding 6 team members including co-founder Preston Evans as new CTO, pivoting toward full-stack custom blockchain services for enterprises.
