Cheniere Energy
Largest US LNG exporter, running Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi terminals on long-term contracts.
Cheniere's existing contracts run to 2050 and don't care about AI or rivals, but new industry supply is already pressing on the terms of its next expansion.
Cheniere Energy builds and runs facilities that cool natural gas into liquid form so it can be shipped overseas, then sells that liquefied gas under deals that lock in revenue through 2050. No competitor or new technology can quickly build the same physical plants or break those customer contracts, and regulators tightly control who can build these facilities. The real risk is that too many other companies are now building similar plants in the U.S., which could push down prices when Cheniere tries to sign new customers after 2027.
FERC ruling on CCL Stage 4 / CCPL Expansion after draft EIS closed May 29, 2026. Shows whether regulatory approval pace for new capacity is slowing or holding.
Outcome of the ~$370M IRS fuel-credit clawback probe reported May 2026. Shows whether tax scrutiny expands into a larger financial or legal risk.
- $20.0B FY2025 revenue, $5.3B net income
- 670 LNG cargoes exported in 2025
- 53 MTPA operating capacity, 40+ MTPA in pipeline
- Industry-wide LNG oversupply from ~9 Bcf/d of 2025 FIDs could compress pricing on future uncontracted volumes.
- SPL Expansion Phase 1 FID (targeted early 2027) could be signed on weak terms into an oversupplied market.
- Senate probe into ~$370 million IRS fuel tax credit payout signals broader tax scrutiny risk.
- Derivative fair-value swings create large reported net loss volatility despite stable operating cash flow.
- DOE could materially restrict new LNG export authorizations, limiting future growth pipeline.

- Is Cheniere Energy profitable in 2026?
- Yes on an operating basis: Q1 2026 revenue was $5.9 billion with Adjusted EBITDA of $2.3 billion, up 25% year over year. However, Cheniere posted a $3.502 billion net loss for Q1 2026 due to derivative fair value swings, not operational weakness, as of March 31, 2026.
- Could AI replace Cheniere Energy's business?
- No. Cheniere's core business is physical LNG liquefaction and export under decades-long take-or-pay contracts requiring ~$50 billion of built infrastructure and FERC/DOE permits. AI is used only for back-office contract review and emissions modeling via StackAI agents deployed in 2025 to 2026, not for the core asset.
- Who is Cheniere Energy's biggest competitor?
- Venture Global (NYSE: VG) is Cheniere's fastest-growing rival, with its stock up about 61.6% year to date versus Cheniere's roughly 17% as of June 2026. Other competitors include NextDecade, Sempra Infrastructure, ExxonMobil's Golden Pass LNG, and Woodside Energy in the US LNG export race.
- Who owns Cheniere Energy?
- Cheniere Energy, Inc. (NYSE: LNG) is publicly traded, with Vanguard Group as its largest institutional holder at about 9% as of December 2024. It owns 100% of the general partner interest and roughly 48.6% of the limited partner interest in Cheniere Energy Partners (NYSE: CQP) as of late 2024.
- Is Cheniere Energy facing a lawsuit or investigation in 2026?
- Yes. Seven Senate Democrats launched a probe in May 2026 into a roughly $370 million IRS alternative fuel tax credit payout to Cheniere for LNG boil-off vessel fuel. Separately, a maritime personal injury lawsuit over a worker fall was filed in Harris County, Texas in May 2026.
- Will Cheniere Energy expand its LNG capacity?
- Yes. On May 28, 2026, Cheniere Partners signed a lump sum EPC contract with Bechtel for Phase 1 of the SPL Expansion Project, targeting a final investment decision by early 2027. Total capacity is approaching or exceeding 53 MTPA as of mid-2026, with over 40 MTPA more in the regulatory pipeline.
