The call

Chewy still leads online pet spending by a wide margin, but slowing organic growth, insider selling, and an unresolved antitrust case are testing that lead.

Chewy sells pet food and supplies online, making most of its money from customers who sign up for automatic repeat deliveries. The company has been hard to beat for 15 years because customers like the convenience and the brand, but Amazon and Walmart could copy this anytime, and new AI shopping assistants might let customers find cheaper pet food across multiple stores without loyalty to any one retailer. The real question is whether Chewy's newer healthcare business, which includes pet clinics and pharmacies, grows fast enough and smoothly enough to become a meaningful part of the company, since that part would be much harder for rivals to replicate than simple pet food delivery.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI shopping agents (Amazon Rufus, ChatGPT Shopping, Perplexity Shopping). Agents that price-compare pet food across sites could route buyers away from Chewy's Autoship convenience, but no agent has shipped that flow yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Amazon and Walmart. Walmart already outranks Chewy on brand mental share for pet, but neither Walmart nor Amazon has shipped a dedicated pet-specialty app or vet service to match Chewy. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 84% of sales come from Autoship subscriptions, and licensed pharmacy plus vet clinics add regulatory and trust barriers competitors can't copy overnight.
What would change this call
Autoship share of net sales falls below 84% or Autoship growth turns negative in a coming quarter. would show subscription lock-in weakening, opening door to disintermediation.
Modern Animal's 29 clinics report progress toward or miss the 2027 EBITDA profitability target. would show whether the healthcare/clinic expansion is a real structural moat or a costly bet.
California antitrust price-fixing case against Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, Best Buy reaches a ruling or settlement. would show whether Chewy or peers face margin caps or liability from industry-wide pricing practices.

Questions people ask
Is Chewy profitable in 2026?
Yes. Chewy reported FY2025 (ended Feb 1, 2026) net income of $740.2 million on $12.60 billion net sales, and Q1 FY2026 net income of $94.8 million on $3.36 billion sales with 30.1% gross margin, per its June 9, 2026 earnings release.
Has Chewy had layoffs?
Yes. Chewy cut 674 jobs at its Dallas fulfillment center in March 2025, now under WARN Act investigation. Reported headcount held at 18,000 through Feb 1, 2026, but Revelio Labs estimates ~17,468 by December 2025, down 5.2% since 2023.
Could AI replace Chewy?
Unlikely for its core business. Chewy's CEO argued in a May 5, 2026 investor presentation that Autoship (84.4% of net sales), regulated Rx/vet care, and physical clinics resist AI-agent disintermediation, though commodity pet-supply reordering remains exposed to future agentic shopping tools.
Who is Chewy's biggest competitor?
Walmart holds the largest pet-category mental share (~28% vs Chewy's ~10-15%) per a March 24, 2026 Morning Consult report, but Chewy dominates online GMV at ~$12.89 billion versus Walmart.com's ~$1.97 billion in 2025, per Statista.

Mixed signals: Chewy stock fell to $21.75 by July 20, 2026 (52-week range $17.40-$43.50) after a June 2026 guidance cut and a May 2026 California antitrust price-fixing case that dropped shares 7.67% in one day on May 19, 2026.

Chewy is publicly traded (NYSE: CHWY) but controlled by BC Partners-affiliated entities, which held about 42.56% of shares as of a November 10, 2025 13G/A filing, though BC Partners announced a $1 billion block sale around March 2026.
