The call

Chip has real users and real revenue, but its main feature is now free at every big bank, and its next products are still on the roadmap, not in customers' hands.

Chip helps people save money automatically by setting aside small amounts from their checking account and moving it to higher-interest savings accounts. The feature that made Chip special a few years ago, autosave pots, is now free inside bigger banks like Monzo, Starling, and Chase, so Chip no longer has an advantage there. Two smaller competitors, Plum and Moneybox, do exactly the same thing Chip does. The one thing that could matter is if Chip finishes its pension account product and AI savings adviser before Monzo and others build the same tools, but that has not happened yet.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generic AI assistants built on open banking data. Any AI agent reading a user's bank feed can already round up and invest spare cash, copying Chip's core trick for free. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Monzo, Starling, Chase UK, and Trading 212. Challenger banks now bundle round-up savings free inside the main account, and Trading 212 undercuts on ISA fees. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. FCA permissions, custody links, and a base of over 30,000 retail shareholders who feel invested in Chip's survival.
What would change this call
Chip's SIPP platform fully launches with transfers-in by H1 2026 as targeted. Would show Chip building a real product moat beyond commoditised autosave.
FCA sandbox decision on Chip's AI wealth guide application (submitted August 2025). Approval would ease advice-giving; denial would stall Chip's key differentiation plan.
Monzo or Starling adds an ISA/investment product bundled free into their main app. Would show challenger banks closing the gap on Chip's remaining differentiation.

  • Competitive edge on savings rates depends on Bank of England rate environment. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting leadership data in one tracker lists a different CEO, unverified against press. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Chip (getchip.uk) profitable?
Chip reported its first profitable quarter in Q3 2023, with revenue growing 922% year on year to that quarter, and full-year 2024 revenue reached £23.8m according to City AM reporting via Business Live, dated 2026-01-27.
Who owns Chip and is it publicly traded?
Chip is privately held. Over 30,000 individuals hold equity via repeated Crowdcube raises, and in September 2025 Channel 4 Ventures became its first institutional investor through a £17m round at a £208m valuation, via a media-for-equity deal rather than cash.
Could AI replace Chip's savings app?
Chip's core autosave calculation is algorithmic and now commoditized, matched free by Monzo, Starling and Chase UK. Chip applied to the FCA sandbox in August 2025 for its own AI wealth guide, but that tool remains unshipped as of the announcement date.
Who is Chip's biggest competitor?
Chip competes directly with Plum and Moneybox, structurally identical UK autosave apps, while challenger banks Monzo, Starling and Chase UK now bundle free savings pots, and Trading 212 offers a free market-leading Cash ISA as of July 2026.
What is Chip's current valuation?
Chip was valued at £208m (£207.68m post-money) in a September 2025 raise combining a £6m round and retail tranche totalling £17m, funded partly via a Channel 4 Ventures media-for-equity deal rather than cash from institutional VCs.
Does Chip offer a pension (SIPP)?
Chip has a Personal Pension/SIPP in beta as of 2025, with full pension transfers-in planned for later in 2026 per company statements, aiming to complete its shift from a simple autosave app to a full wealth platform.
