The call

ChowNow stays profitable on ground marketplaces can't take without hurting themselves, while Owner.com's AI tools and Toast's bundling chip away at the edges.

ChowNow is software that restaurants use to take orders online and manage delivery, without forcing them to switch their cash register system. It has real advantages against the big delivery apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats, since those companies would lose money if they competed too hard on restaurant ordering, and it works with almost any cash register. But Owner.com, a newer company with much more money and backing ($1 billion in funding), is doing the same thing better and adding AI tools to build restaurant websites and write marketing messages, which ChowNow has not launched yet. The company that ships a working AI product first by mid-2026, or the outcome of a lawsuit between them, could swing which one restaurants choose to use.

Why
01
AI pressure: Owner.com. Owner.com's AI website builder and marketing tools go straight after ChowNow's independent restaurant base. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Toast (POS bundler, 74,000 restaurants), Square, SpotOn. Toast folds ordering into its POS for tens of thousands of restaurants, undercutting ChowNow's standalone pitch. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. DoorDash and Uber Eats can't copy commission-free ordering without cutting their own take, and ChowNow's POS-agnostic setup dodges Toast's lock-in.

Questions people ask
Is ChowNow profitable in 2026?
CEO Chris Webb stated in March 2024 that ChowNow is profitable and had raised around $80 million to date. No public financials have been released since, but the company continues operating independently with no reported insolvency or shutdown signals as of mid-2026.
Has ChowNow had layoffs?
Yes. ChowNow cut about 100 employees (20%) in July 2022, another 40 (10%) in December 2022, and 30-60 more after its March 2024 Cuboh acquisition, bringing headcount to roughly 300. By June 2026, Crustdata reported 251 employees, down 4.6% year over year.
Who is ChowNow's biggest competitor?
Owner.com is ChowNow's most direct threat, raising $120M in a Series C in May 2025 at a $1B valuation, versus ChowNow's last confirmed raise of $21M in May 2019. Toast (74,000+ restaurants) and SpotOn (30,000+ restaurants) are larger bundled-POS incumbents also competing for the same restaurants.
Could AI replace ChowNow?
AI website builders and marketing copilots threaten ChowNow's customer-facing layer, and rival Owner.com already markets an AI website builder as of 2026. ChowNow has not shipped a named AI product as of mid-2026, though its POS integrations, payment infrastructure, and 20,000+ restaurant relationships resist quick AI replacement.
Who owns ChowNow?
ChowNow is privately held and venture-backed, not publicly traded. Founder Chris Webb stepped down as CEO in December 2024 to become Founder/Chairman, and Kanika Soni (formerly of Disney, Tesla, and Gilt Groupe) was appointed CEO as of December 11, 2024.
Is ChowNow suing Owner.com?
Yes. ChowNow filed suit against Owner.com in the Northern District of California on August 29, 2025 for false advertising and trademark violations under the Lanham Act, alleging misrepresented review scores. A judge allowed some claims to proceed on January 16, 2026.
