The call

Chrono24 still has the inventory and dealer network to run the market, but it just spent two years cutting staff while rivals sharpened their trust pitch.

Chrono24 is an online platform where people buy and sell luxury watches, mostly secondhand. The company has built a real advantage: it has millions of listings, thousands of vetted dealers, and a promise to authenticate watches up to 50,000 euros. That matters because buying a fake Rolex is a real risk, and Chrono24 solved that for its market. But the business is contracting. Layoffs have cut the company's staff by 25 to 45 percent since 2022, and the company is reportedly loosening its rules about which sellers and watches it allows in order to chase more sales during a downturn in watch prices. That is dangerous. eBay is now offering watch authentication too at lower fees, and a newer startup called Bezel (founded by a former Google engineer) is growing much faster by competing on the same thing Chrono24 built its name on: trust and careful curation. The one thing that could save Chrono24 is discipline: if leadership holds firm on authentication standards and dealer vetting even when sales are slow, the company keeps its edge. If they soften those standards to survive, they hand their only real advantage to rivals.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI shopping agents (ChatGPT, Perplexity) that aggregate listings across marketplaces. If agents search Bezel, eBay, and Chrono24 at once, Chrono24's own search traffic and lock-in weaken. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: eBay Authenticity Guarantee and Rolex Certified Pre-Owned. eBay now authenticates watches at lower fees; Rolex sells its own pre-owned stock through dealers, cutting Chrono24 out. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Two-sided liquidity: 540K listings, 3,000+ dealers, and a €50K authentication guarantee buyers trust.
What would change this call
Chrono24 announces a third layoff round in 2026. Would show the watch-price downturn is still forcing cost cuts under the new CEO.
Reports of dealer migration to Bezel or WatchBox, or counterfeit/listing complaints rise. Would confirm curation is loosening and trust moat is eroding.
Chrono24 closes a new funding round or discloses a valuation. Would clarify whether the reported ~50% markdown from $1.3B is real.

Questions people ask
Is Chrono24 profitable in 2026?
Chrono24 does not publicly disclose profit figures. The company states it hosted 540,000 watch listings valued over 6 billion euros as of January 2025, but no profitability data has been released, and revenue estimates from third parties vary too widely to be reliable.
Has Chrono24 had layoffs?
Yes, twice. In early 2023 Chrono24 cut about 65 jobs, roughly 13% of its then 500 staff, citing falling pre owned watch prices. On January 15, 2025 it cut 110 more roles from about 460, nearly one in four workers, as part of a company reboot.
Who owns Chrono24?
Chrono24 GmbH is privately held, headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany. Backers include General Atlantic, Aglae Ventures (Bernard Arnault's LVMH family office), Insight Partners and Sprints Capital, who led a Series C round exceeding 100 million euros in August 2021, plus celebrity investors Cristiano Ronaldo and Charles Leclerc.
Could AI replace Chrono24?
Unlikely to replace it outright. Chrono24's core value is physical goods liquidity: a two sided network of 3,000+ vetted dealers, escrow, and an authenticity guarantee covering up to 50,000 euros per claim. AI mainly threatens ancillary features like its ChronoPulse pricing index, not the trust and dealer network itself.
Who is Chrono24's biggest competitor?
Bezel, a VC backed US startup founded by an ex Google executive, posted organic search growth of over 1,030% and surpassed 500 million dollars in listings by Q1 2025 per Ahrefs. Chrono24 also faces Rolex's 2022 Certified Pre Owned program and eBay's Authenticity Guarantee.
Is Chrono24 losing its trust advantage?
Trade commentary published February 20, 2026 alleges Chrono24 has loosened listing curation and quality controls to chase transaction volume, which critics say risks the trusted curated marketplace positioning that differentiates it from tightly curated rivals like Bezel and WatchBox.
