The call

ClearBank's UK core is profitable and growing while its license keeps both AI and Big Four banks locked out, but European losses and stablecoin pressure on deposit income are the parts still being tested.

ClearBank is a bank for other businesses in the UK, offering payments and settlement services rather than serving regular customers. It is hard to replace because it has a government banking license and direct access to the Bank of England, which took years and millions to obtain, and which AI or startups cannot simply copy. However, stablecoins and cryptocurrency could pull deposits away and shrink the interest income that makes up more than half its money; the real question is whether its growing fee business can grow fast enough to make up the difference if that happens.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models can't hold a banking license or touch Bank of England settlement, so they can't replace this rail, only run on top of it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Barclays, NatWest, Lloyds, HSBC. Big Four banks could build fintech-BaaS rails but risk cannibalizing their own accounts, so none has shipped a real competitor yet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A rare standalone UK clearing license plus direct Bank of England settlement access that took years to get and few firms bother chasing.
What would change this call
A Big Four bank (Barclays, NatWest, Lloyds, HSBC) launches a competing embedded/agency banking API product. Would show the regulatory moat is being bypassed and ClearBank's incumbent-bar is falling.
ClearBank FY2026 results (expected ~April 2027) show fee income overtaking or closing gap with interest income. Would show ClearBank diversifying away from deposit/interest reliance ahead of stablecoin pressure.
Group-level pretax loss widens further in FY2026 while UK profit growth slows. Would show European expansion spend is outpacing payoff and straining the core business.
Key numbers
  • UK pretax profit £12.2m, up 53% (FY2025)
  • Group pretax loss £16.7m on European buildout (FY2025)
  • Customer balances up 65% to £17.8bn (FY2025)
Named risks
  • Interest income (58% of FY2025 revenue) could shrink faster than fee income growth if stablecoin adoption accelerates. Severity: high
  • Group-level losses (£16.7m FY2025) tied to European expansion could widen if execution stalls. Severity: medium
  • No confirmed new equity round since March 2022 could limit capital for European or US scale-up. Severity: medium
  • US market entry signaled in 2024 remains unconfirmed as of July 2026, creating execution uncertainty. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is ClearBank profitable in 2026?
ClearBank's UK business posted its third consecutive year of profit in FY2025, with UK pretax profit of £12.2m (up 53%) on revenue of £117.7m, reported April 23, 2026. The group as a whole recorded a £16.7m pretax loss due to European expansion spending, not a broken core business.
Who owns ClearBank?
ClearBank is privately held, with key shareholders Apax Digital, CFFI UK Ventures (Barbados) Ltd, and PPF Financial Holdings/PPF Group. Its largest disclosed raise was £175m led by Apax Digital in March 2022, and no new priced equity round has been publicly confirmed since.
Could AI replace ClearBank?
No. ClearBank's core value is a UK banking licence, PRA/FCA authorization, Bank of England settlement access and FSCS protection, none of which AI can hold. It already uses Azure AI internally, cutting payment recovery processing time by about 80% as of December 2024, as an efficiency tool rather than a substitute.
Is ClearBank a safe company to join in 2026?
ClearBank has grown UK revenue 32% and UK profit 53% in FY2025 (reported April 2026), holds an S&P BBB minus investment-grade rating, and opened a new London HQ at Broadgate Tower in February 2026, alongside continued hiring including a new Chief Product Officer in July 2026.
Who is ClearBank's biggest competitor?
The UK Big Four banks (Barclays, NatWest, Lloyds, HSBC) are structurally blocked from competing due to channel conflict. The emerging threat is the stablecoin sector, notably the Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and BlackRock backed 'Open USD' consortium launched June 2026, which could reshape bank deposit economics.
Is ClearBank planning a US launch or IPO?
CEO Charles McManus said in April 2024 the company was considering US entry, possibly via acquisition, and that an IPO was more likely after expanding into markets like the UAE or Asia-Pacific. As of July 2026, no confirmed US launch or IPO filing has been reported.
