The call

Clearco climbed out of its 2023 recapitalization and says growth is back, but it still hasn't raised new equity or proven that growth to anyone outside the company.

Clearco gives quick loans to e-commerce business owners using artificial intelligence to decide who gets money. The problem is that Shopify, Amazon, and PayPal can offer the same thing directly to their own merchants because they already have the customer relationship and deeper pockets. What matters most is whether Clearco's new products launched in September 2025 actually attract enough sellers and whether they can raise fresh funding at a real valuation.

Why
01
AI pressure: Wayflyer (AI-native underwriting, larger scale). Wayflyer's AI underwriting now deploys billions more than Clearco and just landed a $250M credit facility, undercutting on price and speed. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Shopify Capital, Amazon Lending, PayPal Working Capital. These platforms fund merchants straight from checkout data, reaching sellers before Clearco can pitch them. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A decade of underwriting data across 10,000+ merchants lets it fund brands that live outside any single platform's checkout.
What would change this call
Clearco announces a new priced equity round at or above the Oct 2023 recap valuation. Would show investor confidence and capital access are recovering, not just debt refinancing.
Independent audit or filing confirms ~50% 2025 origination growth and stable/improving default rates. Would confirm company-stated growth claims are real rather than unaudited marketing.
Shopify Capital or Amazon Lending publicly expands underwriting into Clearco's core DTC merchant niche. Would show platform incumbents closing the gap on Clearco's remaining defensible customer base.

Questions people ask
Is Clearco still a $2B unicorn in 2026?
No fresh priced round has confirmed that valuation since 2021. Clearco recapitalized in October 2023 with a $60M Series D described by CEO Andrew Curtis as a down round, and no new priced equity round has been disclosed as of mid-2026.
Did Clearco have layoffs?
Yes. Clearco cut 25% of staff in July 2022 and another 30% in January 2023 when co-founder Michele Romanow stepped down as CEO, reducing headcount from a 2022 peak of about 500 to roughly 100-200 by 2024.
Who is Clearco's biggest competitor?
Wayflyer is Clearco's closest rival, having deployed over $5 billion to 5,000+ businesses and closing a $250 million ATLAS credit facility in February 2026, outscaling Clearco's cumulative $3 billion in originations.
Could AI replace Clearco's core business?
Clearco's underwriting relies on AI/ML analysis of Shopify, Amazon, ad-platform, and bank data, but this approach is replicable. Platform incumbents like Shopify Capital and Amazon Lending can run similar AI underwriting natively with better data access, per October 2023 reporting.
Is Clearco profitable?
No independently audited profitability figures are publicly available. CEO Andrew Curtis told The Logic in December 2025 that Clearco tripled origination dollar volume in 2024 versus 2023, but this is a company-stated figure, not an audited financial result.
Who owns Clearco?
Clearco is privately held, backed by venture and debt investors including Inovia Capital, Founders Circle Capital, and Pollen Street Capital, following an October 2023 recapitalization that included a $60M Series D and a $100M asset-backed facility.
