The picture

Canada's economy splits into two very different stories right now. The regulated giants (pipelines, utilities, banks, railways, telecoms) barely feel AI at all. Those businesses run on long contracts, physical networks, and regulation, not on software that AI can copy overnight. The other half of the country's companies are getting hit hard. Consumer apps, hardware bets, and AI-native startups are losing users and revenue to bigger, better-funded rivals: Mitel to RingCentral, Kik to Snapchat and Discord, Untether AI to Nvidia's dominance, Rec Room straight into shutdown as Roblox absorbs its players. Even genuine AI companies born in Canada, like Cohere, Ada, and Sanctuary AI, face crowded fields where American labs and better-capitalized competitors are chasing the same enterprise deals. The one thing that decides survival here isn't whether a company touches AI, it's whether customers have an easy, cheaper alternative sitting right next door. Physical infrastructure and regulated monopolies don't have that problem. Software tools, marketplaces, and hardware bets almost always do, and that's where nearly 40% of the companies in this set are losing ground.
