The call

Clearcover is losing premium volume, lost its financial-strength rating, and now competes with its own AI spinout for the one edge it had.

Clearcover sells car insurance online and built its reputation on using artificial intelligence to handle claims and customer service faster than rivals like Progressive and State Farm. But that advantage is disappearing because AI companies like Ada and Strada are now selling the same automation tools to any insurance company, and Clearcover's own spinoff company (Dearborn Labs) is doing the same thing. The company is losing money, shrinking for three years straight, and just lost its financial-strength rating in April 2026, which insurers need to keep customers and agents trusting them. The one thing that could save it is if Clearcover can restore that rating quickly, because without it, distribution channels and customer renewals tend to dry up within months.

Why
01
AI pressure: Ada, Strada, and Clearcover's own spinout Dearborn Labs. AI vendors now sell the same claims automation to any carrier, and Clearcover's spinout Dearborn Labs monetizes that edge for competitors too. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Progressive, GEICO, State Farm, Allstate. Bigger carriers with more data and cheaper capital keep taking share while Clearcover's premiums fall and losses stay high. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None apparent beyond remaining state licenses, which regulators can and have moved to restrict.

Questions people ask
Is Clearcover profitable in 2026?
No. Clearcover Insurance Company posted a 163% combined ratio in 2023 (versus 158% in 2022), meaning it paid out far more in claims and expenses than it collected in premiums, and written premiums fell again in 2025 to $123M, down 14.5% year over year, per Coverager's March 2026 report.
Is Clearcover shrinking or growing?
Shrinking. Written premiums dropped three years running: down 15% to $144M in 2024, then down 14.5% to $123M in 2025, according to Coverager filings dated March 2025 and March 2026, despite the company launching new non-standard auto lines in Texas and Illinois.
Did Clearcover have layoffs?
Yes. Clearcover cut 15% of staff (81 employees) in April 2023, then cut a further 28% (112 employees) in September 2023, per Coverager reporting. Headcount is now reported around 570 as of April 2026, per Built In.
Who owns Clearcover, is it public?
Clearcover is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2016 by CEO Kyle Nakatsuji and Derek Brigham. It has raised roughly $560M-$610M total, including a $200M Series D in April 2021 at about a $1B valuation led by Eldridge, with no IPO filed as of mid-2026.
Could AI replace Clearcover?
Clearcover's own service layer is already largely AI-run: it reports over 90% of claims intake through AI agents and 93% of policies bound with no human help (company-claimed, March 2026). It has spun out Dearborn Labs to sell that same automation to other carriers, meaning its core tech edge is now a purchasable commodity.
Is it safe to buy insurance from Clearcover?
Caution warranted: Demotech withdrew Clearcover Insurance Company's Financial Stability Rating effective April 9, 2026 (previously rated A since May 2021), and Texas regulators issued a consent order on January 5, 2026 with an $80,000 penalty for claims-handling and licensing violations.
