The call

Contracted generation and queue position protect current cash flow, while growth now rides on hyperscaler capex and credit holding up through 2027.

Clearway Energy owns wind and solar farms that sell power under long-term contracts, mostly to big tech companies building data centers and AI facilities. This business is hard to replace once a contract is signed because power plants take years to build and need special permits, but the real competition is NextEra Energy and Brookfield Renewable, who can also build new plants and sign similar deals. The biggest threat is not from a competitor or new technology, but from credit markets: if tech companies pump the brakes on spending or debt gets too expensive, new power plant deals could dry up, and Clearway would be stuck growing only from its existing fleet.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI data centers are a buyer, not a hunter: hyperscaler demand fills Clearway's pipeline rather than eating its business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: NextEra Energy and Brookfield Renewable. Both chase the same interconnection queue slots and hyperscaler PPAs; NextEra's cheaper capital lets it outbid on price. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Existing long-term PPAs and interconnection queue positions lock in cash flow years before a rival plant can get built.
What would change this call
Outcome of Kahn Swick & Foti shareholder fiduciary-duty investigation (filed May 2026). Would show whether governance or controlling-owner conflicts are eroding investor confidence.
Q2/Q3 2026 CAFD results versus the $470-510M guidance and 12.7 GW late-stage pipeline conversion. Would show whether hyperscaler-driven growth is converting to cash or stalling.
Moody's commentary or credit actions on hyperscaler 2026-2027 capex versus rising leverage. Would show whether data-center capex, Clearway's main growth driver, is cooling.
Key numbers
  • 12.9 GW gross capacity across 27 states (2026-03-09)
  • 2026 CAFD guidance $470-510 million (2026-05-07)
  • Q1 2026 net loss of $68 million, EPS missed (2026-05-18)
Named risks
  • Unresolved Kahn Swick & Foti fiduciary duty investigation into board and controlling stockholder CEG since May 8, 2026. Severity: high
  • Hyperscaler capex and credit deterioration could cool AI-driven PPA demand, per Moody's July 2026 leverage warning. Severity: high
  • Regulatory backlash over data-center driven ratepayer costs could reshape hyperscaler PPA contract terms. Severity: medium
  • Execution risk from interconnection queue delays exceeding three years and wind underperformance at Alta facility in Q1 2026. Severity: medium
  • Competition from lower-cost-of-capital rivals NextEra and Brookfield for same interconnection slots and hyperscaler deals. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Clearway Energy profitable in 2026?
Mixed. FY2025 net income was about $169 million on $1.43 billion revenue, but Q1 2026 posted a net loss of $68 million despite revenue rising 19% YoY to $354 million, missing EPS estimates as of May 18, 2026.
Who owns Clearway Energy?
Clearway Energy Group LLC holds roughly 42% economic interest and controls the public company via Class B/D shares. CEG itself is co-owned by TotalEnergies and Global Infrastructure Partners (now BlackRock) since a May 2022 deal worth about $1.6 billion plus a SunPower equity swap.
Could AI replace Clearway Energy's business?
No. Clearway owns physical generation assets, interconnection queue positions, and long-term PPAs that AI cannot replicate. Instead AI is a customer: it signed roughly 1.17-1.24 GW of Google data-center PPAs announced January 15, 2026, worth over $2.4 billion of infrastructure.
Who is Clearway Energy's biggest competitor?
NextEra Energy (NEE) is the dominant rival with cheaper capital, competing directly for hyperscaler PPAs, for example securing 2.5 GW of Meta solar and wind deals in 2026. Brookfield Renewable is also viewed by analysts as having a stronger long-term cash-flow profile than Clearway.
How big is Clearway Energy's power portfolio?
As of March 9, 2026, Clearway owns about 12.9 GW of gross capacity across 27 states, split between roughly 10.1 GW of wind, solar, and storage and about 2.8 GW of conventional generation, per its annual meeting filing.
Is Clearway Energy a good stock for AI data center exposure?
Clearway holds a 12.7 GW late-stage development pipeline and signed major Google PPAs in January 2026 tied to AI data-center load, but Moody's flagged hyperscaler leverage risk from about $785 billion 2026 capex rising toward $1 trillion in 2027, a risk to the demand thesis.
