The call

FieldView leads on scale and integration depth, but its path forward hinges on whether Bayer keeps funding digital farming through its litigation and restructuring pressures.

Climate FieldView collects information from farm equipment across 250 million acres and helps farmers make decisions about crops and chemicals. It is hard to replace because farmers have years of data stored there and the system connects to equipment from many manufacturers, not just one brand. However, Bayer, the parent company, is cutting costs heavily and has not made much money from FieldView on its own, which means the company may not get the funding and staff it needs to survive the next few years. The picture could change if Bayer spins off its legal liabilities (a major settlement is coming in 2026), frees up resources, or if Bayer's own new AI tools end up replacing FieldView instead of working with it.

Why
01
AI pressure: Farmers Business Network's Norm AI. Norm AI already covers about 187M acres with farmer owned data, competing on less conflicted agronomy advice than FieldView. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: John Deere Operations Center. Deere is both FieldView's key data partner and its biggest rival, since Deere controls where equipment data originates. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Two way integrations with Deere and Precision Planting plus 250M plus subscribed acres make FieldView hard to replace right now.
What would change this call
Bayer breaks out (or continues not breaking out) FieldView/digital-farming as a standalone P&L line in earnings. Shows whether FieldView is ring-fenced as strategic or treated as a cost center.
Confirmed FieldView-specific layoffs or reorg distinct from broader Bayer restructuring. Would indicate parent-level cost pressure is starving digital-farming investment.
Whether the July 2026 Roundup settlement and glyphosate spin-off resolve cleanly or drag on. Clean resolution frees capital for FieldView; prolonged uncertainty likely delays investment.
Key numbers
  • FieldView covers 250M plus subscribed acres in 23 countries (2024-11-14)
  • Bayer Crop Science Q1 2026 sales: €7,558M, up 6.8% (2026-Q1)
  • Deere/FieldView added wireless Work Plan integration (2026-02-23)
Named risks
  • FieldView has no standalone P&L and could be treated as a cost center amid Bayer restructuring. Severity: high
  • Bayer glyphosate litigation and pending $7.25B settlement create parent-level financial uncertainty into 2026. Severity: high
  • Direct subscription monetization of FieldView remains difficult per Bayer executives, Jan 2025. Severity: medium
  • AI agronomy assistants like FBN's Norm AI could commoditize FieldView's insights layer. Severity: medium
  • FieldView depends on Deere's API for equipment data, a partner that is also a dominant competitor. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Climate FieldView profitable on its own?
No clear standalone profit is disclosed. Bayer executives said in January 2025 that monetizing FieldView directly via subscriptions has historically been difficult; its real value is driving seed and chemical sales rather than generating independent software revenue.
Who owns Climate FieldView?
Climate FieldView is owned by Bayer AG. Monsanto bought The Climate Corporation for roughly $930M to $1.1B in October 2013, then Bayer acquired Monsanto (and thus Climate/FieldView) for about $63B in June 2018.
Could AI replace Climate FieldView?
Unlikely to fully replace it by 2026 to 2027. FieldView's moat is 250M+ subscribed acres (Nov 2024) plus two-way John Deere hardware integration, but generic AI agronomy tools like FBN's Norm AI (2025) threaten to commoditize its insights layer.
Is John Deere Climate FieldView's biggest competitor?
Deere is both partner and rival. Bayer and Deere deepened their Operations Center integration in February 2026 to wirelessly export FieldView prescriptions into Deere Work Plans, even as Deere's platform remains the dominant equipment-tied incumbent FieldView competes against.
Is it risky to join Bayer's Climate FieldView team right now?
There is parent-level uncertainty: Bayer's glyphosate litigation carried into 2026, with a $7.25B Roundup settlement still pending final approval as of July 2026, and Bayer is restructuring, though FieldView-specific headcount cuts are not independently verified.
How many acres does Climate FieldView cover?
Bayer stated FieldView was available on more than 250 million subscribed acres across 23 countries as of November 14, 2024, though a January 2025 industry report cited a lower 180 million plus acres across 20-plus countries.
