The call

Clue holds real data and regulatory trust, but sits third in a market where Flo ships AI features faster and Apple gives the basics away free.

Clue helps people track their menstrual cycles and reproductive health, with a 10-year database of user patterns and official medical device approval in Europe that competitors cannot easily replicate. However, Flo is five to ten times larger, better funded, and has already released an AI chatbot feature that Clue has not matched yet. Apple also offers free cycle tracking built into iPhones, and newer AI-powered apps like Vyve and Lila are entering the market. The question that will determine Clue's future is whether it can launch its own AI coach powered by its unique dataset within the next year to close the gap with Flo's head start.

Why
01
AI pressure: Flo Health's Databricks-powered AI Health Assistant. Flo already runs a conversational AI health coach on its data; Clue has no matching AI assistant shipped yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Apple Health (free, pre-installed Cycle Tracking). Apple bundles cycle tracking free on every iPhone, commoditizing the basic prediction layer Clue once charged for. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A decade-long reproductive health dataset plus EU CE-marking as a medical device gives Clue trust Apple and AI apps lack.
What would change this call
Clue ships a conversational AI cycle coach within 12 months. Shows Clue can close the AI feature gap with Flo instead of falling further behind.
Verdane's investment terms or Clue valuation get disclosed. A flat or down mark versus 2023's $65-75M estimate would confirm a modest-exit trajectory.
Clue's paid subscriber count reported again after the 1M May 2025 milestone. Stalled or declining growth would indicate Flo is compressing Clue's paid conversion.
Key numbers
  • 1M paid subscribers reached (2025-05-28)
  • Free-to-paid conversion: 3.7% to 9.3% (2025-05-28)

Named risks
  • No shipped conversational AI assistant while Flo has AI Health Assistant and Databricks platform (2025). Severity: high
  • Apple's free native Cycle Tracking erodes casual-user monetization funnel. Severity: medium
  • Verdane deal size and valuation undisclosed, raising possibility of a flat or down round versus 2023 estimate. Severity: medium
  • EU/UK privacy regulation changes (GDPR Digital Omnibus, UK Data Act 2026) could raise compliance costs for EU-based Clue. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Clue profitable in 2026?
No profitability figures have been disclosed. Clue reported reaching 1 million paid Clue Plus subscribers as of May 28, 2025, with free-to-paid conversion rising from 3.7% to 9.3%, but the company has not published net income or profit margin data.
Who owns Clue now?
Clue is privately held by BioWink GmbH (Berlin). Its largest investor is Verdane, a European growth-equity firm with a EUR 2B fund, which announced a strategic growth investment on January 15, 2026; deal size and valuation were not disclosed.
Could AI replace Clue's app?
Basic cycle prediction is already commoditized by Apple's free, pre-installed Cycle Tracking (since iOS 13) and AI-native rivals like Vyve and Lila. Clue's defense is a decade-long health dataset and 2023 EU CE-marked Class I medical device status, not a shipped AI chat assistant of its own.
Who is Clue's biggest competitor?
Flo Health is Clue's biggest rival: as of November 2024 Flo had 380M+ downloads and 70M+ monthly active users, hit unicorn status in July 2024 with a $200M+ Series C from General Atlantic, and ranks first by in-app revenue versus Clue's third place in 2025.
What is Clue's valuation in 2026?
Clue's post-money valuation after the January 15, 2026 Verdane investment was not disclosed. The last public estimate came from CB Insights, pegging Clue at $65.7 to $75 million as of April 2023, before that funding round.
