The call

CoinDCX holds India's regulatory door shut against foreign rivals, but its own fees are vanishing and its biggest investor is quietly building the product that could replace it.

CoinDCX lets Indians buy and sell cryptocurrencies, and it has real advantages that keep foreign competitors out, like government registration and the ability to handle Indian bank transfers. However, these protections help the whole category more than CoinDCX itself, because Indian rivals like Binance are now allowed in too. The company's real problem is that trading fees, which make up most of the money it brings in, are being slashed to almost nothing by competitors across the industry, and profit margins have fallen to nearly zero. Adding to the trouble: Coinbase, which owns a big chunk of CoinDCX, is now building its own competing products like an AI advisor and options trading, which could steal away customers. A $44 million hack last year also shook customer trust. The one thing that could turn this around would be if CoinDCX figures out how to make serious money from something other than trading fees, like the options product it is testing.

Why
01
AI pressure: Coinbase AI adviser and trading tools. Coinbase, CoinDCX's own investor, ships an AI adviser plus stocks and options in June 2026, aimed at the same retail users. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase and Binance. Coinbase invests in CoinDCX while building competing products; Binance is now FIU-IND registered and expanding in India after its fine. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. FIU-IND registration, UPI/INR banking rails, and 20M+ KYC'd users that foreign exchanges cannot easily replicate.
What would change this call
Coinbase launches direct INR retail product or India-specific app within 12 months. Would show Coinbase shifting from investor to direct competitor against CoinDCX.
CoinDCX options-trading product exits beta/waitlist and reports real volume. Would show whether non-fee revenue can offset the zero-fee trading race.
Another security breach or hack disclosure at CoinDCX within the year. Would show unresolved custody/security risk repeating after the $44M 2025 hack.

Questions people ask
Is CoinDCX profitable in 2026?
Barely. CoinDCX's FY2025 operating revenue was about ₹560 crore with net profit of only ₹1.7 crore, a 0.3% net margin, as of July 2025. The company projected FY26 revenue could more than double to ₹1,180 crore, but margins remain thin amid a sector-wide zero-fee race that began March 2026.
Was CoinDCX hacked?
Yes. In July 2025, CoinDCX suffered a $44 million hack linked to the Lazarus Group, though no user wallets were directly affected. An $11 million bug bounty for fund recovery remained unresolved as of the July 2025 reporting, leaving trust concerns open given India's prior WazirX $235M hack.
Who owns CoinDCX?
CoinDCX was founded in 2018 by Sumit Gupta and Neeraj Khandelwal and operates under holding entity Neblio Technologies (branded DCX Group). It remains privately held; Coinbase made a direct investment in October 2025 valuing CoinDCX at $2.45 billion, though CEO Sumit Gupta denied this was an acquisition.
Could Coinbase replace or outcompete CoinDCX?
Coinbase is both CoinDCX's strategic investor and an emerging rival. In June 2026 Coinbase shipped an AI adviser, stocks, options and pre-IPO markets, and cut 14% of staff in May 2026 for 'AI efficiency,' signaling it could expand competitively into markets CoinDCX serves rather than staying a passive backer.
Who is CoinDCX's biggest competitor?
Domestically, WazirX and CoinSwitch (20M+ users) compete directly, while Binance, fined ₹188 crore and registered with FIU-IND in August 2024, has built a compliant India footprint. Globally, Coinbase, CoinDCX's own investor, is aggressively expanding products that overlap with CoinDCX's offerings as of June 2026.
What is CoinDCX's valuation?
CoinDCX was valued at $2.45 billion post-money after Coinbase's direct investment in October 2025, its first new funding round in over three years. This followed a $135 million Series D in April 2022 at a $2.15 billion valuation backed by Coinbase Ventures, Pantera, Polychain, and Bain Capital.
