The call

CoinTracker has real revenue and a long Coinbase relationship, but that relationship is a rental, not a wall, and AI is already good at the reconciliation work the product sells.

CoinTracker helps cryptocurrency investors track their trades and calculate taxes owed. The company makes money by automating what used to be manual work: sorting transactions, figuring out what you paid versus what you sold for, and filling out tax forms. The problem is that artificial intelligence can now do this kind of sorting and matching almost as well as a human, or better, which means competitors or AI tools could eventually copy the product. The bigger problem is that Coinbase, the crypto exchange that sends CoinTracker most of its customers, could build the same tool themselves or pick a different partner instead. CoinTracker's one chance to stay defensible is its new tool for professional brokers to file clean tax documents directly, which would be much harder for AI to replace and harder for Coinbase to build quickly, but it has not yet proven it can win real customers at scale.

Why
01
AI pressure: General-purpose LLMs and AI reconciliation agents. Categorizing transactions and matching cost basis is structured data work that AI agents are learning to automate directly. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase. Coinbase controls the tax-partner relationship that drives CoinTracker's users and could build the feature in-house or switch partners. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Six years as Coinbase's official tax partner plus TurboTax and H&R Block integrations that took years to build.

Questions people ask
Is CoinTracker profitable in 2026?
CoinTracker has not disclosed current profitability. CEO Jon Lerner said it was profitable before its January 2022 Series A. Third-party estimates put 2025 ARR near 23.1 million dollars, up from about 9 million in 2024, but no audited figures exist.
Could AI replace CoinTracker?
The core task, categorizing transactions, matching cost basis, and generating tax forms, is structured-data reconciliation that industry commentary in 2026 flags as ripe for AI automation. CoinTracker's defense is its Coinbase distribution deal and new 1099-DA compliance suite, not the underlying tax logic itself.
Who is CoinTracker's biggest competitor?
Koinly and CoinLedger are the closest direct rivals, with Koinly often rated ahead on exchange and DeFi coverage as of a June 2026 comparison. The bigger latent threat is Coinbase itself, CoinTracker's largest distribution partner, which could build tax tooling in-house.
Who owns CoinTracker?
CoinTracker is privately held, founded in 2017 by Jon Lerner and Chandan Lodha and backed by Accel, General Catalyst, Initialized Capital, Coinbase Ventures, and Intuit Ventures, among others, following a 100 million dollar Series A in January 2022 at a 1.3 billion dollar valuation.
How many users does CoinTracker have?
CoinTracker's CEO stated the company has over 100,000 paying subscribers as of July 2026, with vendor-adjacent sources citing roughly 3 million total users and over 50 billion dollars in crypto assets tracked as of its 2022 Series A announcement.
What is CoinTracker's relationship with Coinbase?
CoinTracker has served as Coinbase's official tax partner for six consecutive tax seasons as of the 2026 filing season, per a vendor-adjacent source from June 2026, but the partnership is not exclusive by structure and Coinbase could build tax tooling in-house or switch partners.
