The call

Cartier and Van Cleef keep growing double digits with cash piling up, while the real open question is Rupert family control, not AI or LVMH.

Richemont owns Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and other luxury jewelry brands that have built trust for over 100 years. It is hard to copy because the company controls its own stores (71% of sales), owns diamonds and gold, and has relationships with ultra-wealthy customers who specifically want Cartier, not just any expensive watch. LVMH, the bigger competitor, owns Tiffany and other luxury brands but has not taken customers away from Richemont's main jewelry business. The real threat is not LVMH but AI shopping tools that could let customers find luxury goods through computer programs instead of going to Cartier stores; however, Richemont is already using AI itself to understand what customers want and avoid having too much unsold inventory, which helped it save hundreds of millions of dollars. The one thing that could change everything is a slowdown in rich customers buying jewelry in China or the United States, or if the jewelry brand growth rate suddenly drops below what the company has been achieving.

Why
01
AI pressure: Agentic AI shopping assistants (general commerce mediation, not a single named product). AI agents could sit between buyers and brands, but Richemont already uses Google Cloud AI internally for inventory and demand forecasting. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: LVMH (Tiffany & Co., Bulgari). LVMH competes hard in jewelry and watches but is not currently pulling share from Cartier or Van Cleef & Arpels. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Clients ask for Cartier or Van Cleef by name, not 'a nice ring,' and 71% of sales run through Richemont's own stores.
What would change this call
Jewellery Maisons constant-FX growth for two consecutive quarters. Would show if heritage pricing power over Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels is weakening.
LVMH's Tiffany and Bulgari sales growth versus Richemont's Jewellery Maisons for 3-4 quarters. Would show whether LVMH hard-luxury brands are outgrowing Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels.
Outcome of the 9 September 2026 AGM vote on Johann Rupert's board re-election. Would show whether minority shareholders can check the Rupert family's voting control.

Questions people ask
Is Richemont profitable in 2026?
Yes. For FY2026 (ended 31 March 2026) Richemont reported Group sales of EUR22.4bn (+11% constant FX) and operating profit of EUR4.5bn (+23% constant FX), per its own 22 May 2026 results release.
Who owns Richemont?
Control sits with the Rupert family via Compagnie Financiere Rupert, which as of 25 May 2026 held roughly 9-10% of equity but about 50-51% of voting rights through Richemont's dual-class A/B share structure; Johann Rupert is Chairman.
Could AI replace Cartier or Van Cleef & Arpels?
Unlikely for the core craft. Richemont runs a Google Cloud AI Client Platform (live since 2022 across 11 brands, 25+ countries) for demand forecasting and CRM, crediting it with avoiding roughly $280m in excess Cartier inventory (per Richemont's own October 2025 presentation), but heritage and clienteling remain human-driven.
Who is Richemont's biggest competitor?
LVMH, with over EUR90bn in revenue and ownership of Tiffany & Co. and Bulgari, is the dominant rival in hard luxury. Richemont itself overtook Kering to become the world's #2 luxury group in 2025/2026 rankings, per Modaes' 24 June 2026 Fashion Outlook.
Is Richemont's jewellery business slowing down?
No. Q1 FY2027 (quarter ended 30 June 2026) marked a seventh consecutive quarter of double-digit Jewellery Maisons growth, up 24% at constant FX, per Richemont's 15 July 2026 sales release.
What is the governance risk at Richemont?
Proxy advisor ISS recommended on 19 August 2025 that shareholders vote against re-electing Chairman Johann Rupert, citing the dual-class structure that gives the Rupert family about 50-51% of voting rights on roughly 9-10% equity. A shareholder vote is set for the AGM on 9 September 2026.
