The call

Inditex keeps growing sales and margin while cheaper rivals gain share online, with its speed and store footprint still doing the work AI and low-cost copycats have not matched.

Inditex, which owns the Zara clothing brand, designs and sells clothes in 5,456 stores across 215 countries by moving styles from sketch to shelf in just 15 days, using factories near Europe instead of Asia. Cheap online sellers like Shein and Temu copy fast-fashion ideas, but they cannot match Zara's speed or quality because they manufacture thousands of miles away in China, making their profit margins too thin to invest in better stores or marketing. The biggest question is whether new laws in Europe and the US forcing stricter labor and environmental checks will hurt Shein and Temu enough to give Zara more breathing room, and whether Uniqlo, another global clothing chain, decides to start competing directly against Zara instead of serving a different customer.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI helps Inditex forecast demand and cut waste but no AI product replaces its near-shore factories or store network. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Shein and Temu. Shein grew share 26-31% across Germany, France, Spain in 2025, but runs on 3-5% margins versus Inditex's 15%. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A 40-year near-shore supply chain in Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Turkey giving 15-day design-to-shelf speed and under 1% dead stock.
What would change this call
USTR Section 301 forced-labor probe finalizes (expected end of July 2026) with tariffs on Shein/Temu-linked sourcing. Would show regulators, not Inditex, curbing the ultra-cheap rivals' cost edge.
Inditex reports European same-store sales turning negative in an upcoming quarterly release. Would show Shein/Temu or other rivals are actually converting share gains into lost Zara sales.
Inditex gross margin drops below 55% in a future quarterly report. Would show the near-shore cost advantage eroding under tariff or supply-chain pressure.

Questions people ask
Is Inditex (Zara) profitable in 2026?
Yes. Inditex reported FY2025 net profit of €6.2 billion, up 6% year-on-year, on net sales of €39.9 billion, for the fiscal year ended January 31, 2026, per results announced March 11, 2026.
Could Shein or Temu replace Zara?
Unlikely structurally. Inditex runs ~15% operating margins versus Shein/Temu's 3-5%, built on a 40-year near-shore supply chain giving 15-day design-to-shelf cycles, a model ultra-cheap online rivals cannot copy without abandoning their cost base, as of 2026.
Who owns Zara's parent company Inditex?
Founder Amancio Ortega controls roughly 59-60% of Inditex (50.01% via Pontegadea Inversiones plus 9.28% via Partler) as of July 2026; daughter Marta Ortega Pérez has chaired the board since April 2022.
Is Inditex laying off workers in 2026?
Signals are mixed. Inditex's own 2025 annual report states over 163,000 employees, but Revelio Labs data show headcount fell to 153,299 by December 2025, down 9.7% from 2023, with job postings down 58.9% in 2025.
Who is Inditex's biggest competitor?
Shein is the fastest-growing threat, gaining share in Inditex's home European markets (Germany +31%, France +26.7%, Spain +26.6% in 2025), while Fast Retailing/Uniqlo overtook H&M in 2026 revenue to become the world's #2 apparel group.
Will AI replace jobs at Zara?
Partially, in narrow areas. Inditex began using AI-generated model imagery in December 2025 and launched AI virtual fitting rooms by March 2026, but Chair Marta Ortega publicly stressed a 'human factor' over AI at the July 7, 2026 AGM.
