The call

Compound Labs is racing an unshipped $52M V4 rebuild against a live Aave V4 and a protocol, Morpho, that already passed it in size.

Compound Labs built a system that lets people lend and borrow cryptocurrency, like a bank but run by code and token holders instead of a company. It is getting harder to keep customers because Aave, a bigger rival, already launched their new version and is moving faster. Compound is betting everything on a new product called V4 for big money managers, but if that fails or takes too long, the company may not have another chance to win back what it lost.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents could someday manage lending positions across protocols, but no specific product is eating Compound's business today. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Aave. Aave runs $14-15B in TVL versus Compound's $1.24-2.7B, and its V4 hub-and-spoke redesign already shipped in 2026 while Compound's V4 is still unbuilt. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Six years of live operation without a major protocol hack, plus DAO governance and brand name still known to crypto users.
What would change this call
Whether Compound V4's institutional RWA product ships and gains TVL within 6-12 months. Shows if Compound can compete for the same institutional niche Aave V4 already serves.
Whether Compound's fee-switch governance vote passes to route revenue to COMP holders. Shows whether protocol revenue will actually reach token holders instead of just accruing off-chain.
Whether Compound's TVL rank (currently 3rd-7th among lending protocols) rises or falls further. Shows whether outflows to Aave and Morpho are continuing or stabilizing.
Key numbers
  • Compound TVL $1.24B-$2.7B vs Aave's $14-15B (2026-07-18)
  • Weekly protocol revenue only $34,700-$58,500 (2026-07-19)
  • TVL fell from $12B peak (2021) to $2.2B (2022) (2022-11-30)
Named risks
  • Compound V4's $52M institutional RWA redesign fails to ship or capture share against live Aave V4. Severity: high
  • COMP token has no fee-switch or revenue share, leaving holders without a value-capture mechanism as of July 2026. Severity: medium
  • Recurring website/domain hijacking attempts since July 2024 create phishing and reputational exposure. Severity: medium
  • Systemic contagion from the April 2026 KelpDAO/LayerZero exploit could add further bad debt. Severity: medium
  • Core protocol development outsourced to WOOF! and risk management to Gauntlet, reducing internal capability. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Compound Labs profitable in 2026?
Compound Labs' company-level revenue is estimated at roughly $9.2M as of July 2026, while the protocol itself generates only $34,700 to $58,500 per week (low single-digit millions annualized) as of July 19, 2026, a fraction of its 2021 DeFi-summer peak.
Is Compound losing to Aave?
Yes. As of July 18, 2026, Compound's protocol TVL was $1.24B to $2.7B versus Aave's $14B to $15B. Aave also shipped its institutional V4 hub-and-spoke architecture in March 2026, before Compound's own $52M V4 redesign has launched.
Did Compound's founder leave the company?
Robert Leshner, Compound's co-founder, stepped back from day-to-day operations around 2022 to 2023 to found a separate tokenized-Treasury venture called Superstate, per a July 17, 2026 profile; he holds no confirmed active operating role at Compound Labs now.
Is it safe to use or work with Compound Finance?
Compound's website domain was compromised in July 2024 with recurring hijacking attempts since, and in April 2026 the protocol was among lenders exposed to the KelpDAO/LayerZero exploit (roughly $292M stolen, $236M borrowed against it), though Compound's specific loss was not separately quantified.
What is Compound V4 and why does it matter?
Compound V4 is a DAO-approved, roughly $52M institutional real-world-asset lending redesign, the largest capital allocation in Compound's history as of July 21, 2026. Analysts call it existential: it launches after Aave's competing V4 already went live in March 2026.
Could AI replace Compound Labs?
Not directly. Compound's interest-rate setting and liquidations are already automated by smart contracts, and risk management is outsourced to quant firm Gauntlet as of July 2026. AI is largely orthogonal to Compound's survival threat, which is competitive share loss to Aave and Morpho, not automation.
