The call

Confluent's independent-company story ended in March 2026; what remains is an IBM unit whose fate now hinges on headcount, leadership retention, and whether Kafka's roadmap stays open.

Confluent builds software that moves data between different systems for large companies like Michelin and L'Oréal, and it was bought by IBM in March 2026 for $11 billion. AWS, Microsoft, and Google all offer simpler built-in tools that do similar work, though those tools are not quite as flexible or complete right now. The real question is whether IBM will keep Confluent running as its own team with room to grow, or fold it into older IBM software groups and let it shrink; if founder Jay Kreps stays and the company keeps its independence within IBM, it has a real future, but if IBM cuts people and merges it with legacy systems, Confluent becomes just another aging IBM product.

Why
01
AI pressure: AWS Bedrock Agents + MSK, Azure AI Foundry + Event Hubs, Google Vertex + Pub/Sub. Cloud AI agent stacks are bundling their own streaming layers for agents, chipping at Confluent's cross-cloud pitch. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: AWS MSK/Kinesis, Azure Event Hubs, Google Cloud Pub/Sub. Cloud giants keep improving cheap managed Kafka-compatible services, slowly commoditizing what Confluent charges a premium for. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep operational lock-in across 6,500 enterprises plus multi-cloud neutrality that AWS, Azure, and Google can't offer themselves.
What would change this call
Confluent headcount reported via LinkedIn/Altindex drops below 3,200 by end of 2026. Would show IBM integration is cutting deeper than planned, risking talent and delivery capacity.
Jay Kreps departs or steps back from product leadership within a year. Would signal loss of founder-led technical direction under IBM ownership.
Apache Kafka open-source community announces a fork or governance split from IBM stewardship. Would confirm Forrester's flagged risk of licensing tightening and community erosion.

Questions people ask
Is Confluent still a publicly traded company?
No. IBM completed its acquisition of Confluent on March 17, 2026 for $31 per share in cash, an $11 billion enterprise value, and CFLT was delisted from NASDAQ that day, per IBM's newsroom announcement.
Is Confluent profitable?
Not on a GAAP basis: FY2025 GAAP net loss was about -$295.3M. However, non-GAAP operating income improved to $86.1M in FY2025 versus $27.5M in FY2024, on total revenue of $1,166.7M (up 21% YoY), as of December 31, 2025.
Who owns Confluent now?
Confluent is a wholly owned subsidiary of IBM as of March 17, 2026, following an $11 billion all-cash acquisition at $31/share. It previously traded independently on NASDAQ under CFLT after its June 24, 2021 IPO.
Is Confluent laying people off after the IBM acquisition?
Headcount tracking shows a decline from roughly 3,700 employees in March 2026 to about 3,452 by mid-July 2026, a 7% drop in four months, per LinkedIn-based Altindex data, suggesting post-acquisition restructuring.
Could AI replace Confluent's platform?
Unlikely soon. Confluent's 2025-2026 roadmap (Streaming Agents launched August 19, 2025; Flink Agents co-launch October 15, 2025) positions its platform as the real-time data layer AI agents consume, not a service AI models replace.
Is Confluent a safe company to join in 2026?
Contested. It has deep enterprise lock-in (6,500+ customers, 40% of Fortune 500 as of March 17, 2026) but is mid-integration under IBM with headcount falling from ~3,700 to ~3,452 between March and July 2026 and active shareholder litigation over the buyout price.
