The call

Consensys still sits at the center of Ethereum's plumbing, but its wallet lead is being tested by Phantom and Coinbase Wallet while layoffs and IPO delays pile up.

Consensys built MetaMask, a software tool that lets about 100 million people manage cryptocurrency and use blockchain apps. The company also runs Infura, which helps other apps talk to blockchains. Right now, bigger rivals like Coinbase and Phantom are building their own wallets and taking customers away because there is nothing technically special about what Consensys does that they cannot copy. Consensys also makes money from transaction fees, which goes up and down with crypto prices, so the income is not stable. The one thing that matters most is whether MetaMask can keep its users and money over the next few quarters, or whether Phantom and Coinbase Wallet keep winning them over.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI agent wallet frameworks (e.g. Coinbase AgentKit, autonomous trading bots). AI agents that execute onchain actions directly could bypass MetaMask's interface and reduce its role as the click-through layer. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase (Coinbase Wallet, Base L2, exchange). Coinbase Wallet ties directly into Base and its exchange, pulling in users who already trade there instead of installing MetaMask. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. MetaMask is embedded as the default connect option across thousands of dApps, and Infura's RPC relationships are hard for developers to rip out mid-build.
What would change this call
MetaMask's MAU/revenue trend vs Phantom and Trust Wallet through Q4 2026. Shows whether MetaMask's distribution moat is holding or eroding to rivals.
Whether Consensys files for IPO in fall 2026 or delays again to 2027. A third delay would signal deepening financial or market distress.
Another layoff round announced in H2 2026. Would confirm continued cost pressure tied to weak crypto markets or IPO slippage.

  • IPO pushed back to fall 2026 amid weak crypto markets (2026-05-13)

Questions people ask
Is Consensys profitable in 2026?
Consensys is private and doesn't disclose audited profits. Estimated ARR exceeds $150M as of May 2026, but it has cut staff repeatedly (2024, 2025) and delayed its IPO to fall 2026, signaling ongoing cost pressure rather than confirmed profitability.
Will Consensys IPO in 2026?
Consensys pushed its IPO from a targeted February 2026 confidential S-1 to 'fall 2026 at the earliest', per CoinDesk on May 13, 2026, citing weak crypto markets and Bitcoin ETF outflows. Peers Kraken and Ledger also paused IPO plans in 2026.
Is MetaMask losing to Phantom wallet?
Yes, per an AiInvest report dated September 28, 2025, Phantom reportedly overtook MetaMask on revenue and growth metrics in 2025, driven by Phantom's multichain expansion beyond Solana.
Has Consensys had layoffs?
Yes. Consensys cut 20% of staff (162 of 828 employees) in October 2024, another 7% (~49 employees) in July 2025, and a further 20% reduction was reported in August 2025. Headcount fell from 1,297 in 2023 to 1,007 in 2025.
Who owns Consensys?
Consensys is privately held and founder-controlled by CEO Joseph Lubin, an Ethereum co-founder, since founding as ConsenSys AG in 2015. It has raised roughly $715M-$735M across funding rounds, most recently a $450M Series D in March 2022 at a $7B valuation.
Could AI replace Consensys's wallet business?
AI could automate lower-value work like support and code-generation, and agentic trading bots could bypass MetaMask's swap-routing UI. But Consensys retains custody/trust functions, Infura's embedded RPC relationships, and a 2025 SEC dismissal establishing wallet software isn't a broker, which AI alone can't replicate.
