The call

Contabo sits safely outside hyperscaler reach but stays exposed to Hetzner and other budget peers on pure price and specs.

Contabo rents cloud servers and computing power to budget-conscious customers worldwide, making money by charging flat monthly fees instead of charging by the hour like Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure do. It is hard for the big cloud companies to compete with Contabo because they would lose money on flat-rate deals, but it is very easy for other low-cost rental companies like Hetzner and DigitalOcean to copy Contabo by offering similar specs at similar prices. The one thing that could change everything is whether Hetzner's recent big price increase sticks around, giving Contabo breathing room, or whether Hetzner cuts prices again and squeezes Contabo's profits down to nothing.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI coding tools don't replace raw VPS compute, and Contabo now sells NVIDIA L40S/H100/H200 GPU instances to ride AI demand instead of losing to it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Hetzner. Hetzner competes on the exact same price-per-spec battlefield; its June 2026 price hike gave Contabo room, but a reversal puts pressure right back on. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Hyperscalers can't profitably match flat-rate high-RAM pricing, so the real fight stays contained to peers like Hetzner, OVH, and DigitalOcean.
What would change this call
Hetzner reverses or softens its June 2026 price hike. Would remove Contabo's temporary pricing advantage and restore peer pressure on margins.
A second major outage at Contabo's Hub Europe campus within 12 months. Would undercut the reliability reputation customers pay for over cheaper peers.
KKR announces a sale or IPO process for Contabo. Would signal exit timing and reveal a buyer profile that could change investment in infrastructure.

Questions people ask
Is Contabo profitable?
Yes based on the last disclosed figures: ahead of its 2022 sale, Contabo forecast about EUR21.4M adjusted EBITDA on roughly EUR43.7M revenue for 2021, a margin near 49 percent, per a Reuters report dated 2022-04-12. No audited figures have been published since.
Who owns Contabo?
KKR acquired a majority stake in Contabo on June 8, 2022 in a secondary buyout worth roughly $1.2 billion, with Oakley Capital's Fund V retaining a minority position. Oakley's original Fund IV, which bought out the founders in 2019, exited with over 10x return.
Is Contabo a safe company to join or use?
Contabo has operated for 20-plus years since its 2003 founding as Giga-International, added 81 new hires and 150,000 new customers in 2025, and holds ISO 27001/27017/27018, PCI-DSS and SOC 1/2 certifications with GDPR-compliant EU data residency as of 2025-12-19.
Could AI replace Contabo?
No. Contabo's core business is physical VPS and dedicated server hosting, which is not AI-replaceable infrastructure resale. It has instead added AI capacity, launching a GPU Cloud with NVIDIA L40S, H100 and H200 instances in early 2026 and an AI support agent called ContaBro in 2025.
Who is Contabo's biggest competitor?
Hetzner is Contabo's closest peer in EU budget VPS hosting, but Hetzner raised prices on its dedicated-vCPU CCX line by roughly 169 to 173 percent in mid-2026, narrowing its cost advantage over Contabo on higher server tiers, per a July 2026 comparison.
Has Contabo had major outages?
Yes, on September 2, 2024, Contabo suffered a multi-hour outage at its Nuremberg data center caused by a cooling failure, affecting all VPS, dedicated and object storage instances there. The company published a root-cause postmortem on 2024-09-13.
