The call

Corteva sits second in global seeds and first in US corn and soy, with AI so far acting as a tool inside its labs rather than a competitor at its door.

Corteva makes seeds and pesticides for farmers worldwide. It is hard to replace because the company has spent decades getting government approvals, building a library of plant traits, and partnering with distributors, none of which a rival or AI tool can do quickly. AI can help Corteva design better crops faster, but cannot bypass the years needed for field tests and regulatory sign-off or rebuild its network of farm-supply dealers. The big unknown is whether the planned split into two companies (one for chemicals, one for seeds) in late 2026 will work smoothly and whether U.S. regulators will block or limit some loyalty deals with distributors.

Why
01
AI pressure: Profluent's ProGen3 and OpenCRISPR-1 gene-editing AI models. AI speeds up trait discovery inside Corteva's own pipeline; it has not produced a rival seed product that farmers can buy instead. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Bayer Crop Science. Bayer holds 23% global seed share versus Corteva's 17%, but a Feb 2026 settlement opened trait licensing between them instead of a price war. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Decades of EPA/regulatory approvals, proprietary germplasm libraries, and entrenched distributor ties that take years to rebuild.
What would change this call
Corteva completes the H2 2026 split into New Corteva and Vylor on schedule. Shows execution strength; delay would signal separation risk.
Outcome of FTC/state antitrust case over crop-protection loyalty programs. An adverse remedy could weaken distribution moat and loyalty lock-in.
Whether Bayer or Syngenta launch a seed product visibly gaining US corn or soy share. Would indicate the seed oligopoly position is being challenged.

Questions people ask
Is Corteva profitable in 2026?
Yes. Corteva posted FY2025 net income of about $1.09 to 1.1 billion on $17.401 billion in net sales, and Q1 2026 revenue hit $4.91 billion, up 11.0% year over year, with EPS of $1.50 beating the $1.18 consensus, reported May 2026.
Is Corteva splitting into two companies?
Yes. Corteva announced in October 2025 it will separate into 'New Corteva' (crop protection) and a seed genetics spinoff named 'Vylor' in May 2026. Management reaffirmed the split is on track for H2 2026 in its May 5, 2026 earnings release, with an investor day planned mid-September 2026.
Who is Corteva's biggest competitor?
Bayer Crop Science, which holds roughly 23% global seed share versus Corteva's 17%. The two settled seed-royalty litigation for $610 million in February 2026, a deal that opens corn and cotton trait out-licensing rather than resolving competitive displacement between them.
Could AI replace Corteva's crop scientists?
No. Corteva uses AI, including a Profluent Bio partnership announced October 2025 and Google AI models cited in a May 2026 case study, to speed molecule and gene-editing discovery, but EPA approvals, field-trial validation, and proprietary germplasm remain human-and-regulator-gated steps AI cannot bypass.
Is Corteva facing layoffs?
Headcount is roughly flat to slightly declining: Corteva's own 10-K cites 21,500 employees as of December 31, 2025, down about 2.3% from 22,000 in 2024, a modest trim rather than a large-scale layoff.
Is Corteva involved in antitrust or legal trouble?
Yes. In June 2026 Corteva agreed to an $85 million settlement covering over 100,000 farmers in a class action over crop-protection loyalty programs, and a separate FTC and state antitrust case over the same loyalty programs, filed in 2022, remains active.
