The call

Craigslist keeps making money on a shrinking pile of listings while Facebook Marketplace takes the growth, and nobody at the 50-person company is building anything to stop it.

Craigslist is a classified ads website where people buy, sell, and find jobs in their local area. It is hard to replace because people in the same city keep using it out of habit, and there are many old listings there, but Facebook Marketplace has already won most users with a bigger, easier platform, and Craigslist is not building new features to compete. The company could change its fate only if it invested heavily in fighting scams and improving its product, but right now it is just cutting costs and surviving; if job listings collapse first, the whole company could shrink much faster than expected.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-generated scam listings and chatbot-written fake ads. AI makes fake job and rental posts cheaper to produce and harder to spot, and Craigslist has shipped no AI moderation to counter it. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Facebook Marketplace (Meta). 1.2 billion users and a mobile-first app have pulled casual buyers and sellers away, cutting Craigslist revenue from $1.035B in 2018 to $302M in 2024. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Dense, decades-old local inventory in jobs and housing, plus near-zero cost structure lets it stay profitable at any size.
What would change this call
Craigslist job-listings revenue (35% of mix) in 2026 filings or industry reports. Sharp decline would show its biggest remaining revenue pillar is collapsing.
Any Craigslist product launch: AI moderation, ID verification, or mobile redesign. Would show the company is finally responding to Facebook Marketplace's pressure.
Fair Housing Act or Section 230 ruling affecting classifieds sites within 12-18 months. Would test whether Craigslist's small staff can absorb costly compliance changes.

Questions people ask
Is Craigslist profitable in 2026?
No audited figures are public, but analyst estimates (AIM Group, cited May 2025) put revenue at about $302 million in 2024, down from $1.035 billion in 2018, a roughly 70% six-year decline with no signal of a reversal.
Who owns Craigslist?
Craigslist remains privately held. Founder Craig Newmark turned down about $11 billion in VC and banking offers (per December 2025 reporting) and has since given away all his Craigslist equity, reported at $392 million in 2023, to his charitable foundation.
Is Craigslist losing to Facebook Marketplace?
Facebook Marketplace reaches roughly 1.2 billion users, about 40% of Facebook's MAUs, per 2025 industry commentary, and uses AI-powered listing personalization Craigslist lacks, positioning it as the dominant threat to Craigslist's classifieds business.
Could AI replace Craigslist?
AI is not replacing classifieds directly, but AI-enhanced discovery on rivals and AI-enabled scams are eroding Craigslist's position; a 2025 Gallup/Stop Scams Alliance survey found 12% of successful scams that year involved AI or deepfakes, and Craigslist has no public AI moderation response.
Who is Craigslist's biggest competitor?
Facebook Marketplace (Meta) is widely cited as Craigslist's largest competitor as of 2025, given its roughly 1.2 billion user reach and AI-driven listing personalization; Mercari and OfferUp rank second and third in US horizontal classifieds revenue per a May 2025 analyst report.
Is Craigslist shrinking or shutting down?
Craigslist is not shutting down; it still ranked No.1 in US horizontal classifieds revenue and traffic as of a May 2025 analyst report, but revenue has fallen from an estimated $1.035 billion in 2018 to about $302 million in 2024.
