The call

Credit Karma is growing fast inside Intuit but is being folded into a bigger AI push whose payoff for its own referral business is still unproven.

Credit Karma lets people check their credit score and get matched with lenders and credit products for a commission. It is hard to replace because it has 140 million users, direct relationships with hundreds of lenders, and years of credit history data on those users, though Experian (a major credit company) offers a competing free service with a different score type. The big question is whether new AI assistants like ChatGPT will send customers directly to lenders and skip Credit Karma entirely, or whether Intuit's deal with these AI companies will actually route people back through Credit Karma and make it stronger. Job cuts and reorganization at Credit Karma under Intuit in 2026 will show whether the company is being integrated successfully or is losing focus.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT and Claude assistants with direct lender integrations. If AI chatbots start routing loan approvals straight to lenders, Credit Karma's referral fees get skipped entirely. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Experian. Experian runs its own free-score marketplace with real FICO scores, competing head-on for the same lender referral dollars. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 140M+ members and years of lender integrations give it scale and data most rivals cannot quickly copy.
What would change this call
Intuit FY2026 Q3-Q4 earnings disclose partner-referral revenue tied to AI assistant lead flow. Shows whether ChatGPT/Claude route loans through or around Credit Karma's commission rails.
Experian ships a free FICO-based marketplace feature with measurable user growth versus Credit Karma. Would show Experian's free-FICO edge converting into real share loss.
Intuit commentary on whether Credit Karma is strategic or a divestiture candidate post-Consumer-segment merger. Would reveal whether internal restructuring is weakening or strengthening its position.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue $2.3B, up 32% YoY (2025-07-31)
  • 140M+ members on platform (2025-07)
  • 117 Oakland staff laid off, effective July 31, 2026 (2026-05-20)
Named risks
  • Folding into Intuit's Consumer segment reduces standalone visibility and may mask underperformance. Severity: high
  • 117-person Oakland layoff and 17% Intuit-wide cut (effective July 31, 2026) signal organizational churn. Severity: high
  • AI assistants (ChatGPT, Claude) could route loan approvals direct-to-lender, bypassing Credit Karma's commission rails. Severity: medium
  • Experian's free FICO offering erodes Credit Karma's score-product differentiation. Severity: medium
  • Prior FTC settlement (2022) over misleading pre-approval claims raises compliance risk as AI-driven recommendations expand. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Credit Karma profitable in 2026?
Credit Karma is not broken out separately anymore. As of August 1, 2025, Intuit folded Credit Karma into a unified 'Consumer' segment (with TurboTax and ProTax), so standalone profitability is no longer disclosed; FY2025 segment revenue was $2.3B, up 32% YoY, as of 2025-07-31.
Is Credit Karma doing layoffs in 2026?
Yes. A WARN notice filed May 20, 2026 disclosed 117 Credit Karma employees at its Oakland office will be laid off effective July 31, 2026, part of parent Intuit's announced 17% (~3,000 person) company-wide cut to refocus on AI.
Who owns Credit Karma?
Credit Karma is a wholly owned subsidiary of Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq: INTU), acquired for approximately $7.1 billion in December 2020 after a DOJ antitrust review forced divestiture of Credit Karma Tax to Square/Cash App.
Could AI like ChatGPT replace Credit Karma?
Unlikely to fully replace it by 2026: Intuit signed a $100M OpenAI partnership (2025) and a multi-year Anthropic deal (early 2026) to embed Credit Karma into ChatGPT/Claude rather than be bypassed, though lender-referral commission rails remain the key unresolved battleground.
Who is Credit Karma's biggest competitor?
Experian is the most-cited rival: unlike Credit Karma's VantageScore-only model, Experian offers a free FICO score directly, a differentiator third-party reviewers flagged as of June 19, 2026.
How fast is Credit Karma growing?
FY2025 (ended July 31, 2025) revenue hit $2.3B, up 32% YoY, with Q4 alone up 34% to $649M; Intuit then guided a deceleration to 10-13% growth for FY2026, per its August 21, 2025 earnings release.
