The call

Daqo has the cash to outlast a price war it didn't start and can't end, waiting on Beijing to let the industry consolidate.

Daqo New Energy produces polysilicon, the raw material used in solar panels. The company has lots of cash and no debt, so it can survive bad times, but it cannot control its prices because polysilicon is a basic commodity sold by four big Chinese competitors (Tongwei, GCL, Xinte, and Daqo itself). What could change the picture is whether the Chinese government actually enforces new efficiency standards in January 2027 that would force weaker competitors to shut down, which could let Daqo raise prices. A deal that would have consolidated the industry was blocked by regulators in January 2026, so right now Daqo is just waiting to see if government policy shifts or if the market naturally recovers.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI doesn't touch chemical vapor deposition tanks; this is a commodity manufacturing problem, not a software one. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Tongwei, GCL, and Xinte (Chinese polysilicon rivals). Four producers hold roughly 65% of China's polysilicon output; all four are flooding the same oversupplied market and crushing prices together. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Zero debt and about $2.0B in cash and deposits let Daqo sit out the price war instead of selling at a loss.
What would change this call
Daqo's Q2 2026 earnings release (~Aug 25-26, 2026) sales volume and average selling price. Shows whether withholding inventory actually produced a price recovery or just cash burn.
Whether China's Jan 1, 2027 mandatory energy-efficiency standards force any producer to shut capacity. Tests if the government will actually rationalize polysilicon supply after blocking the 2026 consolidation deal.
Any change to Daqo's or peers' UFLPA entity-list status in 2026. Would show whether US import restrictions are tightening or easing for Chinese polysilicon.
Key numbers
  • Q1 2026 revenue fell to $26.7M from $221.7M in Q4 2025 (2026-04-29)
  • Produced 43,402 MT but sold only 4,482 MT in Q1 2026 (2026-04-29)
  • $2.0B cash and deposits, zero debt as of Mar 31, 2026 (2026-03-31)
Named risks
  • Prolonged polysilicon price war could erode $2.0B cash cushion if sales-withholding strategy fails. Severity: high
  • Beijing repeatedly blocking consolidation, as with the $7B plan halted January 2026, removes pricing-power path. Severity: high
  • UFLPA Entity List status since June 2022 blocks US market access and could tighten further. Severity: medium
  • Kunshan AI power-hardware diversification has undeterminable financial impact as of June 2026. Severity: medium
  • Commodity oversupply persists with no structural moat versus Tongwei, GCL, or Xinte. Severity: high

Questions people ask
Is Daqo New Energy profitable in 2026?
No. Daqo posted a Q1 2026 net loss of $88.4M and revenue collapsed to $26.7M from $221.7M in Q4 2025, with gross margin at -521.5%, as reported April 29, 2026. The company deliberately withheld sales, producing 43,402 MT but selling only 4,482 MT.
Could AI replace Daqo New Energy's business?
No, AI does not threaten Daqo's core activity, which is physical chemical vapor deposition polysilicon manufacturing in Xinjiang, a capital and energy intensive heavy-industry process. As of June 3, 2026, Daqo is instead building a Kunshan facility to supply power hardware for AI data centers.
Who is Daqo New Energy's biggest competitor?
Daqo competes in a four-way tie for global polysilicon leadership with Tongwei, GCL Technology, and Xinte Energy, together holding about 65% combined market share in 2024, per Bernreuter Research published November 24, 2025. No single incumbent dominates; all four face the same commodity price collapse.
Why did Daqo's revenue crash so badly in early 2026?
Daqo intentionally withheld sales volume, producing 43,402 MT in Q1 2026 but selling only 4,482 MT, betting Beijing would enforce price support after killing a $7 billion industry consolidation plan in January 2026. This strategy caused Q1 2026 revenue to fall to just $26.7M, reported April 29, 2026.
Is Daqo New Energy on any US restricted lists?
Yes. Daqo's subsidiary Xinjiang Daqo New Energy has been on the US Department of Homeland Security's UFLPA Entity List since June 21, 2022 over forced-labor allegations, which the company disputes. Daqo released a third-party labor due-diligence report on September 27, 2023 denying the claims.
What is Daqo New Energy's new AI-related business?
In June 2026, Daqo signed an agreement to build a Kunshan manufacturing base for AI-data-center power hardware, including energy storage, solid-state transformers, and batteries. Phase 1 is about RMB 2.1 billion of a roughly RMB 6 billion total project, with financial impact still undeterminable as of June 3, 2026.
