The call

The data.ai name now lives inside Sensor Tower, a PE-backed rollup betting that merged panel data can survive Apple and Google's next privacy round.

data.ai collects information about how people use mobile apps by tracking them through a special software tool installed in thousands of apps. It was hard to copy because Apple and Google don't let most companies see this data anymore, but data.ai had built up a library of it over years. Now that advantage is shrinking because Apple and Google keep tightening privacy rules even more, and a competitor called Similarweb is offering similar information and winning over customers. The biggest thing to watch is whether Apple and Google lock down app data even further, which would make data.ai's information less valuable than it already is.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models need this kind of SDK panel data to train on, not replace it, but AI-built rivals could copy the dashboards cheaply. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Apple and Google. Apple and Google keep tightening OS-level privacy rules, degrading the SDK panel data that data.ai and Sensor Tower are built on. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Its SDK and panel data, now merged with Sensor Tower's into App IQ, is hard for anyone to rebuild from scratch.
What would change this call
Apple or Google ship new privacy restrictions affecting app tracking/SDK data by late 2026. Would show the core panel data moat is degrading further.
Sensor Tower announces another reorg or layoff round within 6-12 months of the AppMagic deal. Would confirm the recurring post-acquisition instability pattern continues.
Sensor Tower launches its off-platform revenue estimation product in H2 2026 as planned. Would show the merged data.ai/Sensor Tower pipeline can still ship new defensible products.
Key numbers

  • data.ai raised $157M total across 9 rounds (2025-03-27)
  • Combined revenue estimated $17M to $84M, wide range (2026-07-02)
Named risks
  • Apple/Google OS-level privacy changes could further degrade the SDK panel data the moat depends on. Severity: high
  • Recurring 6-12 month reorg cycles tied to acquisitions create ongoing workforce instability. Severity: medium
  • Financial figures (revenue $17M-$84M, funding $46M-$226M) are conflicting and unaudited across trackers. Severity: medium
  • Similarweb's aggressive 'Sensor Tower alternative' marketing could erode enterprise renewals. Severity: medium
  • data.ai brand diluted into Sensor Tower's pipeline, losing independent market identity. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is data.ai still an independent company?
No. data.ai ceased to exist as an independent company on March 18, 2024, when rival Sensor Tower acquired it and cut staff, per TechCrunch. The data.ai brand now survives only as a product line inside Sensor Tower, not as a standalone corporate entity.
Who owns data.ai now?
data.ai is owned by Sensor Tower, its former rival, which acquired it in March 2024. Sensor Tower itself is majority owned by Riverwood Capital, with strategic stakes from Bain Capital Credit and Shinhan Securities, which led an October 2025 investment round, per Clay.com.
Did data.ai have layoffs?
Yes. When Sensor Tower acquired data.ai on March 18, 2024, it absorbed part of data.ai's roughly 400-person team and announced accompanying staff cuts. Combined headcount then fell from about 1,205 in 2023 to 878 in 2024 before recovering to roughly 950 by December 2025, per Revelio Labs.
Is data.ai profitable?
Unclear and unverifiable. Pre-acquisition data.ai revenue was estimated around $100M annually (TechCrunch/app2top, March 2024), but post-merger Sensor Tower revenue estimates range wildly from $17M to $84M across trackers as of 2026, with no audited public figures disclosed.
Who is data.ai's biggest competitor?
Similarweb, which acquired 42matters in 2024 and as of July 2026 actively markets itself as the '#1 Sensor Tower Alternative.' Other rivals include Appfigures, AppTweak, and AppMagic, though Sensor Tower acquired AppMagic itself in May 2026.
Could AI replace data.ai's analytics platform?
Partly. The dashboard and summarization layer is commoditizing as competitors like Sensor Tower, Similarweb, and AppTweak all ship 'AI Copilot' genAI features. But the underlying proprietary SDK-panel data that powers download and revenue estimates cannot be replicated by a general LLM without the same data pipes.
