The call

A newly profitable robot maker with a real grid contract, sitting one lost SOE account or one subsidy cut away from a much thinner story.

Deep Robotics makes robots and sells them mainly to Chinese power companies and through middlemen. It is hard to replace right now because the Chinese government has locked it into big contracts, but this advantage is weakening fast: a competitor called Unitree is five times larger, more profitable, and racing to go public first with access to the same government customers and the same subsidies. The one thing that matters most is whether Deep Robotics can actually sell its humanoid robot (only four units sold so far), because if sales stay tiny in 2026, investors will realize the humanoid robot is just a story propping up the stock price, not a real business.

Why
01
AI pressure: Open-source vision-language-action models challenging DeepVLA 1.0. As VLA models commoditize, Deep Robotics' own DeepVLA software layer has no proven edge over free alternatives. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Unitree Robotics. Unitree sells into the same SOE accounts with 5x the revenue, 10x the profit, and a faster path to a STAR Market listing. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A CNY 1 billion State Grid framework contract that gives it a foothold Unitree has not yet matched at the same account.
What would change this call
Unitree wins a flagship SOE account (State Grid, China Southern Power Grid, or Baosteel-class) in 2026. would show Deep Robotics' SOE lock-in is not durable against same-cost-structure rivals.
Deep Robotics STAR Market IPO prices below the ~$1.1-1.5B unicorn mark. would show the valuation gap flagged by Caixin was real, not inflated marketing.
DR02 humanoid unit sales in 2026 stay in single or low double digits. would show the humanoid narrative is a valuation prop rather than a real business line.
Key numbers
  • 2025 revenue $49.6M, up 3.3x year over year (2025)
  • 2025 net profit CNY 28.7M, first full-year profit (2025)
  • Over one-third of 2025 net profit came from subsidies (2025)
Named risks
  • Profitability depends heavily on government subsidies covering over one-third of 2025 net profit. Severity: high
  • 64% of revenue flows through integrators/traders, weakening direct customer and data control. Severity: high
  • Humanoid DR02 sold only 4 units through 2025 despite central role in valuation narrative. Severity: medium
  • Domestic rival Unitree has no structural barrier to winning the same SOE contracts, is 5-10x larger. Severity: high
  • Valuation discrepancy between Caixin's $300-500M estimate and $1.1-1.5B unicorn figure unresolved pre-IPO. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Deep Robotics profitable?
Yes, Deep Robotics posted its first full-year net profit in 2025, CNY 28.7 million (about $4.2M), on revenue of CNY 337 million (about $49.6M), up 3.3x year over year. However, government subsidies contributed over one third of that net profit, per its STAR Market prospectus disclosed June 2026.
Who is Deep Robotics' biggest competitor?
Unitree Robotics, a fellow Hangzhou quadruped maker, is Deep Robotics' closest rival. Unitree's 2025 revenue was roughly 5x and net profit roughly 10x Deep Robotics', and Unitree's STAR Market IPO was approved by the CSRC on July 1, 2026, ahead of Deep Robotics' pending review.
Is Deep Robotics going public?
Deep Robotics filed for a Shanghai STAR Market IPO, accepted May 18, 2026, seeking to raise over CNY 2.5 billion (about $367M) at a post-issue valuation above CNY 10 billion (about $1.5B). As of July 8, 2026, its IPO review status was 'Inquired'.
How much does Deep Robotics rely on humanoid robots for revenue?
Very little so far. Despite launching the DR02 humanoid in October 2025 and marketing it as an 'embodied AI' company, Deep Robotics sold only four humanoid units (DR02/DR01 combined) across 2024 and 2025, per its own prospectus data disclosed June 2026.
Could AI replace Deep Robotics?
Not the hardware side: Deep Robotics manufactures ruggedized quadruped and wheel-legged robots with a claimed 20,000-unit annual capacity (June 2026, vendor-claimed) and holds physical contracts like the State Grid framework. But its DeepVLA 1.0 software layer, unveiled December 2025, is unverified and exposed to commoditizing vision-language-action research.
Does Deep Robotics have big customers like State Grid?
Yes, Deep Robotics signed a five-year, CNY 1 billion framework agreement with State Grid to supply inspection robots to over 1,000 substations, disclosed in its July 2026 prospectus comparison. But 63.98% of 2025 revenue flowed through integrators/traders rather than direct end customers.
