Robotics and industrial automation
105 companies assessed. 58 of them, 55.2%, sit in the two least protected bands, against 53.3% across all 10,525 companies assessed.
Industrial robotics is splitting into two very different stories. The German and Japanese motion-and-control makers, gearmotors, linear guides, sensors, drives, PLC hardware, keep winning because factories can't swap out safety-critical or precision parts easily, so companies like Yokogawa, igus, Mitsubishi Electric, Bosch Rexroth and SEW-Eurodrive show low pressure and high moat scores. Meanwhile the cobot and service-robot layer is getting crushed by Chinese price competition. Universal Robots, Franka Emika, Doosan, Techman and Siasun are all watching Chinese cobot makers like JAKA, AUBO, Dobot and Elite Robots undercut them on price while bigger arm makers FANUC, ABB and KUKA fold cheaper cobots into their own lineups. Consumer and service robotics is worse: iRobot, SoftBank Robotics, CloudMinds, Titan Medical and Vicarious Surgical show almost no defense left, either outcompeted on speed and price or simply failed to ship a product. The one thing deciding survival is whether a company sells something hard to copy, precision motion parts, safety systems, decades of design-ins, or something easy to copy, a robot arm or a delivery bot, where Chinese manufacturers and AI-native entrants can match functionality fast and sell it cheaper. Humanoid robotics is pulling capital and attention away from industrial cobots on top of that.

- Will Chinese robot makers take over the cobot market?
- They already lead on volume. AUBO holds the top share in China's cobot market and JAKA, Dobot and Elite Robots compete hard on price against Universal Robots, Doosan and Techman. The bigger arm makers FANUC, ABB and KUKA are responding by adding their own cheaper cobots rather than losing ground quietly.
- Is iRobot going to survive?
- iRobot's revenue fell 23% and it's now fully owned by Chinese manufacturer Picea after being outpaced by Roborock, Ecovacs, Dreame and Eufy on both navigation tech and price. Nothing in its current position points to it regaining share.
- Which industrial robot companies are safest from AI disruption?
- Companies selling parts that are hard to swap out, Yokogawa's safety-critical controls, igus's motion parts, Mitsubishi Electric's factory automation gear, SEW-Eurodrive's drives, show the least pressure because customers rarely re-engineer around them.
- Why is Universal Robots losing ground?
- Universal Robots pioneered collaborative robot arms but now faces FANUC, ABB and KUKA shipping competing cobots into its own enterprise accounts, while Elite Robots undercuts on price with smaller buyers. Its moat score is low at 4, reflecting that squeeze from both directions.
- What happened to surgical robotics startups like Vicarious Surgical and Titan Medical?
- Vicarious Surgical dissolved without ever selling a product, and Titan Medical's surgical robot business failed outright and pivoted into cardiac imaging as Conavi, where product revenue dropped from $401K to $63K. Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci already dominates the market both aimed for.
- Are humanoid robots hurting traditional industrial robot makers?
- Yes, especially in China. Siasun's industrial robot segment fell 46% in H1 2025 as domestic humanoid makers UBTech, Unitree and Galbot pulled attention and investment, and JAKA is shifting its own bets toward humanoids as its IPO stalls.
- Chinese cobot makers (AUBO, JAKA, Dobot, Elite Robots) growing combined share above half of China's domestic cobot market
- Major arm makers (FANUC, ABB, KUKA) announcing built-in gripper or tooling product lines
- Large new funding rounds or contract wins for humanoid robot makers (Figure, Unitree, UBTech, AgiBot)
