The call

Deribit keeps a wide lead in ETH options, but Coinbase's own IBIT rival and Bullish Exchange have already pulled ahead in BTC options open interest.

Deribit is owned by Coinbase and lets traders bet on the price movements of Bitcoin and Ethereum. It used to control almost all Bitcoin options trading, but BlackRock and other competitors have taken away half of that business in the last year or two. Deribit still owns most Ethereum options and has special access to US traders through Coinbase, which could help it hold on, but a major technology switch scheduled for September 2026 could either shore things up or cause even more traders to leave for rivals like BlackRock's platform or Bullish Exchange.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI-driven trading firms and market makers add order flow to Deribit's books rather than replace the exchange itself. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: BlackRock's IBIT options and Bullish Exchange. BlackRock's IBIT options overtook Deribit in BTC open interest in April 2026, and Bullish Exchange grabbed the number two BTC options spot. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deribit still holds over 90% of ETH options volume and now carries Coinbase's US regulatory access and institutional client base.
What would change this call
Coinbase INTX cutover to Deribit's Starbase engine on September 9, 2026 completes without major outages. shows Coinbase can stabilize Deribit's platform without bleeding volume to rivals.
Deribit's ETH options share drops below 85% by end of Q4 2026. would show its last dominant moat is also eroding to competitors.
BlackRock's IBIT or Bullish Exchange launch ETH options products. would show incumbents extending the same BTC-style takeover into Deribit's remaining stronghold.

Questions people ask
Is Deribit profitable?
Deribit does not publish standalone profit figures, but Coinbase said it expected Deribit to be Adjusted EBITDA-accretive immediately after the acquisition closed on August 14, 2025, and Deribit logged a record $185B trading month and $60B open interest that same month.
Who owns Deribit now?
Deribit is a wholly owned subsidiary of Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN). Coinbase closed the acquisition on August 14, 2025, originally valued at about $2.9B cash plus roughly 11M shares, with effective value near $4.3B due to share appreciation.
Is Deribit still the leading Bitcoin options exchange?
Not unambiguously. BlackRock's IBIT options open interest overtook Deribit's for the first time around April 25, 2026 ($27.61B vs $26.9B), and Deribit's BTC options share has fallen from over 90% five years ago to roughly 39-45% by mid-2026.
Could AI replace Deribit?
No. Deribit's moat is exchange infrastructure, VARA licensing, and deep liquidity pools, none of which AI can replicate. The IMF noted in October 2024 that AI-driven trading raises volumes and volatility, which is a tailwind for exchanges like Deribit rather than a substitute.
Who is Deribit's biggest competitor?
BlackRock's IBIT options (took the BTC options open interest lead April 25, 2026) and Bullish Exchange, which launched BTC options in October 2025 and climbed to #2 globally in BTC options open interest by June 22, 2026, are Deribit's fastest-growing rivals.
Is it risky to rely on Deribit right now?
Yes, near-term: on September 9, 2026 Coinbase plans a hard, no-parallel-run cutover of its International Exchange onto Deribit's new Starbase matching engine, a migration with no fallback window that could disrupt trading if it fails.
