The call

DICE made a hit game while EA cut jobs across all four Battlefield studios and prepares for a $55 billion ownership change.

DICE makes Battlefield, a large-scale combat video game that has been around for over 20 years and uses a custom engine that lets players destroy buildings and fight hundreds of players at once. Call of Duty (made by Microsoft) and AI-powered tools are making this harder to defend: Call of Duty has a loyal audience and a newer game out now, while AI can now do quality-control testing, draw cosmetic artwork, and animate characters faster and cheaper than people. The real test is whether EA's new owners (a Saudi fund and private investors taking the company private in a deal closing in late 2026) will keep funding the studio or use AI to cut costs so sharply that creative work suffers and players leave for Call of Duty.

Why
01
AI pressure: EA's internal AI tools for QA, art, and animation. EA already uses AI for about 85% of QA work and is cutting cosmetic art and animation jobs at DICE. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Call of Duty (Activision/Microsoft, Black Ops 7). Black Ops 7 competes directly for the same shooter players as Battlefield 6, pulling concurrent players away. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Frostbite engine and 20 years of large-scale destruction tech keep Battlefield's core systems hard to copy quickly.
What would change this call
EA take-private deal closes or collapses by Sept 28, 2026 CFIUS deadline. Determines whether PIF/Silver Lake ownership and cost-cutting mandates take hold at DICE.
Battlefield 6 Season 4 Steam concurrent players vs Black Ops 7 Season 5 over next two quarters. Shows whether Battlefield's playerbase stabilizes or keeps losing ground to Call of Duty.
A second Battlefield Studios layoff round within 12 months of deal close. Would confirm LBO-style cost extraction rather than reinvestment in DICE.

Questions people ask
Is DICE profitable as an EA subsidiary?
DICE does not report standalone financials since it has been wholly owned by EA since October 2006. EA's overall FY2026 GAAP net revenue was about $7.5 billion as of March 31, 2026, but DICE's individual contribution is not broken out separately.
Did DICE have layoffs in 2026?
Yes. In March 2026, EA laid off an undisclosed number of staff across all four Battlefield Studios entities, including DICE, despite Battlefield 6 selling 7 million copies in its first three days after its October 10, 2025 launch.
Who owns DICE and is that changing?
DICE is wholly owned by Electronic Arts since October 2006. EA itself agreed on September 29, 2025 to be taken private by PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners for about $55 billion, with the close deadline extended to September 28, 2026 pending US CFIUS review.
Could AI replace jobs at DICE?
EA CEO Andrew Wilson said on April 29, 2026 that roughly 85% of EA's quality assurance work company-wide is now AI-driven, and Battlefield 6 faced backlash starting December 2025 over suspected undisclosed AI use in paid cosmetic art.
Is Battlefield 6 losing to Call of Duty?
As of July 22, 2026, Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty Black Ops 7 both peaked around 40,000 concurrent Steam players, roughly even, after Battlefield 6's launch peak of 656,000 to 747,000 fell 85 to 90 percent by mid-2026.
What is DICE's biggest competitor?
Call of Duty (Activision/Microsoft) is DICE's longstanding rival in premium military shooters; its Black Ops 7 launched within weeks of Battlefield 6 in late 2025 and matched it at about 40,000 concurrent Steam players by July 22, 2026.
