The call

Didi still owns China's ride-hailing traffic but just swung to a loss while Alibaba's AI booking tool and no Hong Kong relisting date sit over its stock.

Didi is China's largest ride-sharing app, controlling about 70 to 76 percent of the market. The company got squeezed hard in early 2026: it lost money instead of making profit, pushed down by Alibaba's mapping app offering cheaper rides by comparing prices, by Meituan bundling rides with food delivery, and by traditional car makers launching their own ride fleets. The biggest threat is that self-driving robot taxis could eventually make Didi's advantage of having lots of human drivers irrelevant. One thing that matters most: whether Alibaba's AI booking system actually pulls customers away from Didi in the next few quarters, and whether Didi's share of Chinese rides drops below 70 percent.

Why
01
AI pressure: Alibaba's Amap with Qwen AI booking. Amap's Qwen AI booking, live since March 2026, lets riders compare and book across apps, threatening Didi's grip on demand. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Alibaba (Amap) and Meituan. Amap's aggregation and Meituan's cross-sell squeeze fares and margins even as Didi keeps most of the GMV. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Didi still books 70 to 76 percent of China's ride-hailing GMV, giving it driver density and rider trust rivals lack.
What would change this call
Didi's Q2 2026 earnings (~Aug 28) show profit or a second straight quarterly loss. Whether Q1's RMB1.2B loss was a one-off or a sustained margin breakdown.
Didi's China ride-hailing GMV share falls below 70% in any reported quarter. Whether Amap and Meituan are actually converting riders away from Didi.
Hong Kong exchange confirms or continues to withhold a Didi primary-listing date. Whether Didi's equity remains stuck in OTC limbo or regains a major listing venue.

Questions people ask
Is Didi Global profitable in 2026?
No, not in the latest reported quarter. Didi posted a net loss of RMB 1.2 billion in Q1 2026 versus a RMB 2.4 billion profit a year earlier, and Adjusted EBITDA fell to RMB 0.9 billion from RMB 3.1 billion YoY, partly due to lawsuit-settlement cash costs, as of March 31, 2026.
Is it safe to invest in Didi Global stock right now?
Didi has traded OTC (ticker DIDIY/DIDI.Y) since its June 2022 NYSE delisting following a Chinese cybersecurity review, with no confirmed Hong Kong relisting date as of June 2026. Shares were down about 34% year-to-date as of June 15, 2026.
Who is Didi Global's biggest competitor?
In China, Alibaba's Amap aggregator forces riders to price-compare across platforms and shipped its own AI booking feature on March 23, 2026, six days after Didi's. Meituan cross-sells rides via its super-app; Didi still held an estimated 70-76% of China ride-hailing GMV as of mid-2025.
Could AI or robotaxis replace Didi's driver network?
Didi is racing to build its own answer: its R1 robotaxi with GAC Aion entered public service in Guangzhou in December 2025, an R2 fleet began public-road testing around January 2026, and Didi launched an AI ride-booking assistant on March 17, 2026, ahead of rival Alibaba's Qwen feature.
Is Didi Global laying off workers or hiring?
Sources conflict but point to growth, not cuts. Per stockanalysis.com, Didi had 22,335 full-time employees as of December 31, 2025; per Revelio Labs, headcount worldwide reached about 25,749, up 10.6% YoY, with Brazil the fastest-growing location at +24.6% YoY.
Who owns Didi Global now that it left the NYSE?
Didi remains publicly traded but only over-the-counter under ticker DIDIY/DIDI.Y since its forced NYSE delisting in June 2022 after a Chinese Cyberspace Administration cybersecurity review. A planned Hong Kong relisting was suspended in 2022 with no confirmed new date as of June 2026.
