The call

DCG's Grayscale business keeps losing ground to BlackRock and Fidelity while founder-level fraud litigation and a paused IPO leave its equity without a clear price or exit.

Digital Currency Group owns Grayscale, which sells investment products that let people buy bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies without owning them directly. Grayscale was once the only easy way to do this, but BlackRock and Fidelity launched their own competing products starting in early 2024, and Grayscale has lost about 20 percent of its revenue since then. The company's bigger problem is that its founder and top executives are being sued for fraud in federal court over how they ran a lending business called Genesis, with a major court decision expected in July 2026 that could go against the company and its leadership personally, and the company cannot easily sell shares or raise money because its planned stock listing got put on pause.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product displaces crypto custody or trust-fund structures; DCG's fight is regulatory and legal, not algorithmic. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund. Since January 2024 ETF approvals, BlackRock and Fidelity have pulled AUM straight out of Grayscale's GBTC and ETHE funds. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Existing GBTC/ETHE asset base and embedded capital gains create tax friction that slows investor exits to rival ETFs.

Questions people ask
Is Digital Currency Group profitable in 2026?
DCG does not disclose consolidated financials, but its main revenue engine Grayscale reported revenue down about 20% year over year as of its November 2025 IPO filing, and Grayscale's IPO was paused in May 2026, pointing to financial strain rather than confirmed profitability.
Is Barry Silbert facing fraud charges?
Yes. A July 15, 2026 federal court ruling revived a New York common-law fraud claim against Barry Silbert personally and DCG over the 'Genesis Yield' product, part of the ongoing McGreevy v. DCG securities class action in Connecticut federal court.
Who is Digital Currency Group's biggest competitor?
Grayscale, DCG's asset management arm, competes against BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust and Fidelity's Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund, both approved January 2024, which have eroded Grayscale's once-dominant lead and contributed to a 20% YoY revenue drop reported November 2025.
Could AI replace Grayscale or Digital Currency Group's business?
DCG's core asset management and custody business depends on SEC regulatory trust structures, not AI-replaceable data or workflows. Instead, DCG's Yuma subsidiary launched a fund in June 2026 wrapping Bittensor AI infrastructure into an investable crypto product.
Did Digital Currency Group sell CoinDesk?
Yes, DCG sold CoinDesk to Bullish Global in November 2023 for roughly $70 to 80 million, after originally buying the media outlet for just $500,000 in 2016.
Is Grayscale going public in 2026?
Grayscale confidentially filed for a US IPO in November 2025 but paused those plans in May 2026 citing a slowdown in the crypto listing market, with no restart expected before Q4 2026 at the earliest.
