The call

Dongfeng will keep existing because Beijing owns it, but BYD is taking its customers and Huawei now owns the tech that's supposed to win them back.

Dongfeng Motor is a government-owned Chinese car company that makes regular and electric vehicles. It is struggling because BYD sells far more cars and charges much less, while Dongfeng depends entirely on Huawei to design its smart dashboards and self-driving features instead of building these itself, which means Huawei could do the same work for Dongfeng's competitors. The biggest change would be if the Chinese government forces Dongfeng to merge with another state car company to reduce competition between government-owned firms, which would give it more scale and resources to compete with BYD.

Why
01
AI pressure: Huawei Qiankun/HarmonyOS stack. Dongfeng's self-driving and cockpit software comes from Huawei, the same stack Seres, Aito, and five other automakers use. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: BYD. BYD sold 4.27M vehicles to Dongfeng's 2.47M in 2025 while cutting prices up to 34%, pulling buyers away. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Full state ownership means SASAC will not let Dongfeng collapse, guaranteeing survival even as market share erodes.
