The call

Growth is fast and the data is hard to copy, but every big rival is racing to bolt AI onto the same kind of screening business.

Dow Jones Risk & Compliance helps banks and companies figure out if they are doing business with criminals, terrorists, or people on government blacklists. It is hard to copy because it owns a massive database of sanctioned people and entities that took years to build, plus its software locks into how banks do their paperwork. Rivals like World-Check and LexisNexis have similar databases, but the real question is whether artificial intelligence can do the simple matching work (checking a name against a list) so cheaply that Dow Jones loses money on smaller customers, even if it keeps the biggest banks loyal.

Why
01
AI pressure: General-purpose AI research agents (e.g. OpenAI/Anthropic tools doing open-web due diligence). AI agents can already scrape adverse media and match names cheaply, squeezing the low-value screening tier from below. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: LSEG/Refinitiv World-Check, LexisNexis Risk Solutions, S&P Global, Moody's Analytics. All rivals sell overlapping sanctions and KYC data with their own AI layers, but none has displaced Dow Jones in bank RFPs yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Licensed, curated sanctions and ownership data (4M+ records) wired directly into bank KYC systems that are costly to rip out.
What would change this call
News Corp FY2026 Q4 earnings, August 2026, Risk & Compliance growth rate reported. Deceleration to single digits would suggest peers like LSEG or LexisNexis are winning share.
LSEG/Refinitiv or S&P Global announcing an AI due-diligence product winning bank RFPs against Dow Jones Integrity Check. Would show a rival closing the AI-driven due-diligence gap.
News Corp disclosures on Dow Jones bolt-on M&A in supply-chain or defense adjacencies through 2026. Undisciplined or stalled deals could signal strategic drift from the stated $1B EBITDA target.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue $337M, up 15% YoY (2025-08-31)
  • FY2026 Q3 growth +19% YoY (2026-03-31)

Named risks
  • Low-value name and sanctions-list matching being commoditized by general-purpose AI research agents. Severity: medium
  • LSEG, Moody's, or S&P shipping a materially better AI due-diligence product winning bank RFPs head to head. Severity: medium
  • Growth rate slipping from high-teens to single digits in the FY2026 Q4 print due in August 2026. Severity: medium
  • Dependence on News Corp continuing capital allocation toward the $1 billion five-year EBITDA target after March 2026 commitment. Severity: low
  • Conflicting third-party headcount estimates (7,468 vs 24,313) suggest limited visibility into actual staffing and scale. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Dow Jones Risk & Compliance profitable?
It is a segment inside News Corp, not a standalone filer, so no independent profit figure exists. Its revenue hit $337 million in FY2025 (ended June 2025), up 15% YoY, making it the fastest-growing line in Dow Jones's Professional Information Business as of August 2025.
Who owns Dow Jones Risk & Compliance?
It is owned by Dow Jones & Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of publicly traded News Corp (Nasdaq: NWSA). Voting control of News Corp consolidated to Lachlan Murdoch through a new trust running to 2050 after a $3.3 billion family settlement on September 8, 2025.
Could AI replace Dow Jones Risk & Compliance?
Unlikely to be replaced wholesale: Dow Jones itself deploys AI via Integrity Check (launched April 2024, built with Xapien) to generate due-diligence reports in about 5 minutes, but the underlying moat is its curated database of 4 million-plus entity records and roughly 54,000 sanctioned-ownership mappings, which generic AI agents cannot replicate without equivalent licensed data.
Is Dow Jones Risk & Compliance growing fast?
Yes. Revenue grew 19% YoY in the March 2026 quarter (FY2026 Q3, reported May 7, 2026) and 20% YoY the quarter before that (December 2025 quarter), up from 15% growth to $337 million for full-year FY2025.
Who are Dow Jones Risk & Compliance's biggest competitors?
Its closest rivals in sanctions and KYC screening are LSEG's Refinitiv World-Check, LexisNexis Risk Solutions, Moody's Analytics, and S&P Global Market Intelligence (including Bureau van Dijk Orbis), all comparably resourced players in the compliance-data oligopoly as of 2026.
What is Dow Jones Integrity Check?
Integrity Check is Dow Jones Risk & Compliance's generative AI due-diligence tool, launched April 9, 2024 with technology partner Xapien. It produces multi-source investigative background reports in about 5 minutes versus days of manual analyst work, and by mid-2026 included added anti-hallucination safeguards.
