The call

Dragonfly's fee income is locked in for years, but its carry and reputation ride on Fund IV picks landing in a market that has not fully recovered.

Dragonfly Capital invests in cryptocurrency and blockchain companies, backed by relationships with founders and limited partners across the US and Asia. The main question is whether it can beat bigger rivals like a16z crypto and Paradigm when making actual investment returns, not just collecting management fees, the crypto market is shrinking, and competitors have deeper pockets and similar networks. Everything hinges on who stays in charge (founder Haseeb Qureshi is now the key person after a co-founder left) and whether their current fund's bets pay off in the next year or two.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. This is a relationship and judgment business. AI helps with diligence but does not replace founder access or LP trust. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: a16z crypto and Paradigm. a16z crypto runs on far more capital and Paradigm raised big too, both competing for the same deals and LP dollars. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its US-Asia founder network and a $650M Fund IV closed above target in a bear market, showing LPs still trust the team.
What would change this call
Dragonfly Fund IV reports its first major exit or write-off within 18 months. Would show whether the bear-market alpha thesis is real.
A second senior Dragonfly GP departs after Alex Pack's exit to Hack VC. Would signal eroding LP confidence and deal-access instability.
Dragonfly attempts a Fund V raise around 2028. Would test whether crypto winter has stalled its fundraising momentum.

Questions people ask
Is Dragonfly Capital profitable?
Dragonfly is a private venture and hedge fund manager, not a product company, so it earns management and performance fees rather than 'profit' in the traditional sense. It closed a $650M Fund IV in February 2026, above its $500M target, signaling strong LP confidence despite a crypto bear market.
Could AI replace Dragonfly Capital?
No. Dragonfly's core business is judgment-based capital allocation and founder relationships, which AI tools support but do not replace. Managing Partner Haseeb Qureshi downplayed near-term AI risk to crypto in a February 2026 interview, framing the firm as positioned to benefit from AI-crypto convergence rather than threatened by it.
Who is Dragonfly Capital's biggest competitor?
a16z crypto is the largest incumbent, reportedly managing $9.5 billion to $20 billion in crypto AUM as of early-to-mid 2026. Paradigm is a closer specialist peer, reportedly raising $1.5 to 2 billion as of March 2026 and expanding into AI and robotics investing.
Did Dragonfly Capital face DOJ legal trouble?
Yes. In July 2025, federal prosecutors in the Roman Storm Tornado Cash trial said they were considering criminal charges against Dragonfly partner Tom Schmidt over a 2020 investment. DOJ then reversed course by July 30, 2025, stating on record that Dragonfly and its principals were not investigation targets.
Why did Dragonfly co-founder Alex Pack leave?
Alex Pack, who co-founded Dragonfly in 2018 with Bo Feng, departed the firm and went on to found rival crypto VC firm Hack VC, a split reported around February 2026 and attributed to differing visions between the founders.
How big is Dragonfly Capital's Fund IV?
Dragonfly closed its fourth fund at $650 million on February 17, 2026, exceeding its original $500 million target despite a crypto bear market, matching the size of its 2022 Fund III which also raised $650 million.
