The call

The core ingredients business faces no near-term AI or entrant threat, but its higher cost base against Givaudan and unfinished merger integration set the terms for returns.

DSM-Firmenich creates the flavoring, fragrance, and nutrition ingredients that food and personal care companies buy to make their products taste, smell, or perform better. The business is hard to replace because factories need special equipment, government permits, and years of trust with customers, and because AI cannot yet design novel ingredients from scratch that work at scale. The real problem is that DSM-Firmenich costs more to run than its main rival Givaudan (spending 8 to 10 cents per dollar of sales on overhead versus Givaudan's 3 cents), and the company is selling off a nutrition division and reorganizing through 2026, which means execution risk is high: if leadership can narrow that cost gap, the stock could recover; if they stumble on the sale or integration, returns will stay weak.

Why
01
AI pressure: Osmo (AI-driven scent and molecule design startup). AI scent-modeling tools like Osmo could speed rival formulation, but regulatory approval and plant scale still gate real substitution today. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Givaudan. Givaudan runs the same flavor and fragrance business at roughly 3% overhead versus DSM-Firmenich's 8 to 10%, squeezing margin comparisons. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Regulatory approvals, proprietary formulas, 234 manufacturing sites and long customer contracts make switching suppliers slow and costly.

ANH divestment to CVC closes by end-2026 as planned. Whether the portfolio pivot completes cleanly or stalls, affecting focus and costs.
Outcome of DSM-Firmenich's motion to dismiss in the antitrust civil case. Whether legal liabilities remain contained or escalate like IFF's $11M settlement.

  • Large non-cash impairments (e.g. ~€1.9B in FY2025) tied to portfolio changes could recur. Severity: medium
