The call

Duck Creek's carriers are hard to unseat today, but its growth is flat and its payoff now runs through Vista's exit clock, not just its product roadmap.

Duck Creek sells software that insurance companies use to write policies, set prices, and handle claims. It is locked in with about 33 of the top 50 North American insurers, and switching costs are high because the software is woven into their daily operations and rules. Guidewire is a real competitor offering similar tools, and both companies are racing to add artificial intelligence features that could automate underwriting decisions. The company's revenue has not grown since 2022, so the big question is not whether Duck Creek survives, but whether its owner Vista can sell the company at a high enough price to make investors money, which depends entirely on buyer appetite and timing, not on Duck Creek's operations.

Why
01
AI pressure: Guidewire's agentic AI platform and AI-native insurtech entrants. Agentic AI could automate the underwriting and rating configuration work Duck Creek's platform is built to handle, squeezing its role. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Guidewire Software. Guidewire runs a live competing core system and is adding its own AI features, contesting the same carrier deals. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 370+ carriers, including 33 of the top 50 in North America, run core policy and claims data on Duck Creek, and regulators require re-certification to switch.
What would change this call
Guidewire or an AI-native insurtech announces migration of an existing Duck Creek carrier client. Would show incumbent lock-in eroding, not just contested new business.
Send Technology integration produces or fails to produce marquee new-logo wins within 12 months of July 2026 close. Tests whether Duck Creek's agentic AI pivot is converting into real customer wins.
Vista Equity announces a sale, IPO, dividend recap, or continuation fund for Duck Creek. Determines equity payoff timing and whether R&D funding continues through AI transition.

Named risks
  • Vista's exit timing and structure (sale, IPO, dividend recap) controls equity payoff more than operations. Severity: high
  • Revenue appears flat since 2022 (~$310M to ~$303M estimate), signaling stalled top-line growth. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting headcount trackers and BuiltIn-flagged PE-driven restructuring suggest possible ongoing workforce cuts. Severity: medium
  • Guidewire and AI-native insurtechs racing on agentic underwriting could erode Duck Creek's greenfield win rate. Severity: medium
  • Integration risk from newly closed Send acquisition (Jul 7 2026) into core platform. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Duck Creek Technologies profitable in 2026?
Duck Creek no longer discloses audited financials as a private company. ZoomInfo estimates 2026 revenue at about $302.9M, roughly flat versus the last public figure of $310M in fiscal 2022, suggesting stalled top-line growth under Vista Equity Partners ownership since March 2023.
Who owns Duck Creek Technologies now?
Vista Equity Partners has owned Duck Creek since closing an all-cash acquisition on March 30, 2023, valued at approximately $2.6 billion ($19.00/share, a 64% premium to the 30-day VWAP). Duck Creek was delisted from NASDAQ at that time and remains Vista's sole portfolio holding as of July 2026.
Who is Duck Creek Technologies' biggest competitor?
Guidewire Software is Duck Creek's most-cited direct rival in P&C core insurance platforms, per a November 2025 buyer's guide comparison. Sapiens International, Insurity, Majesco, Vertafore and EIS Ltd are also named as peers in the core insurance software market.
Could AI replace Duck Creek Technologies?
Unlikely to fully replace it: Duck Creek's moat is deep system-of-record lock-in with 370+ customers and 33+ of the top 50 North American carriers, per its own July 2026 site data. It is instead layering AI in, launching an Agentic AI Platform (April 28, 2026) and acquiring underwriting-AI firm Send (July 7, 2026).
Did Duck Creek Technologies get acquired recently?
Duck Creek itself became an acquirer on July 7, 2026, buying UK-based Send Technology Solutions, an AI-native underwriting orchestration company supporting over $26B in gross written premium, to build what it calls an agentic underwriting-to-core platform.
Is Duck Creek Technologies growing or shrinking?
Duck Creek claims double-digit year-over-year SaaS ARR growth in H1 fiscal 2026 (vendor-claimed, April 27, 2026) but revenue estimates (~$302.9M in 2026 vs $310M in fiscal 2022) and multiple headcount trackers point to a flat-to-shrinking business since its 2023 take-private.
