The call

Dune still has the data and the crowd, but it is fighting AI-native and enterprise rivals on a stale valuation and a thinner headcount.

Dune Analytics lets crypto teams and traders query and visualize blockchain data across many networks without writing code. For years, Dune's big advantage was that it had decoded blockchain data no one else could easily access, plus 200,000 users building dashboards on its platform and close relationships with crypto projects. Today that advantage is crumbling fast. Allium is a well-funded competitor offering similar data tools to big institutions, Surf is a new AI-powered startup explicitly designed to replace Dune, and simpler AI chatbots that just let you ask questions in plain English are making the whole dashboard-building workflow feel old. Dune has not raised money since 2022, is burning cash, just laid off a quarter of its staff, and is betting everything on unproven AI tools to win back customers during a crypto market slowdown when those customers have less money to spend anyway. Whether Dune survives depends almost entirely on whether it can raise new funding at a decent valuation and prove its AI products actually work and make money.

Why
01
AI pressure: Surf (AI-native crypto research tool). Surf raised $15M explicitly to replace Dune's SQL dashboards with natural-language crypto research, aiming at the same analysts. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Allium. Allium closed a $40M Series B in June 2026 to sell enterprise-grade on-chain data warehouses, chasing Dune's paying institutional customers. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 200,000+ community dashboards and deep protocol embeddedness like CoW Swap solver rewards make switching costly.
What would change this call
Dune closes a new funding round in the next 6-12 months. Up or flat valuation signals market believes the AI pivot; a down round or no round signals doubt.
Allium or Surf announce named enterprise or protocol-team customers switching from Dune. Would show Dune's contested moat is actually eroding, not just under threat.
Dune discloses MCP or agent-payment product revenue by Q1 2027. Would validate the new AI-agent monetization thesis behind the 2026 layoffs.
Key numbers
  • Revenue grew $4M to $9.5M (2023 to 2024)
  • Burned $14.9M EBITDA in 2023 (2023)
  • Cut 25% of staff, ~35-38 people (May 2026)
Named risks
  • No new funding round since Feb 2022 Series B despite active cash burn and a 2026 restructuring. Severity: high
  • AI-native rival Surf and enterprise-funded Allium attacking Dune's core segments simultaneously. Severity: high
  • Unproven monetization timeline for MCP and agent-payment products following the AI pivot. Severity: medium
  • Crypto sector downturn compressing customer budgets and renewal rates across the industry. Severity: medium
  • Core SQL-to-dashboard workflow directly commoditizable by natural-language AI interfaces. Severity: high

Questions people ask
Is Dune Analytics profitable?
No. Dune Analytics reported 2023 EBITDA of negative $14.9 million against roughly $4 million in revenue, per Preqin data. Revenue reportedly grew to about $9.5 million in 2024, but no profitability has been disclosed as of mid 2026, and no new funding round has closed since February 2022.
Did Dune Analytics lay off employees?
Yes. In May 2026, Dune cut approximately 25 percent of its staff, roughly 35 to 38 people from a peak of 140 to 150 employees, to redirect capital toward AI agent and institutional data products, confirmed by CEO Fredrik Haga.
Could AI replace Dune Analytics?
AI threatens Dune's core SQL query and dashboard workflow, with natural language interfaces like Surf AI targeting the same task. Dune is countering by launching its own MCP server, CLI, and agent tools in March 2026 to make AI a feeder into its data warehouse rather than a replacement.
Who is Dune Analytics' biggest competitor?
Two rivals are pressuring Dune simultaneously as of mid 2026: Allium, an enterprise-grade blockchain data warehouse that raised a $40 million Series B in June 2026, and Surf, an AI-native crypto research startup that raised $15 million and is explicitly positioned against Dune.
Who owns Dune Analytics?
Dune Analytics AS is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2018 by CEO Fredrik Haga and CTO Mats Olsen in Oslo, Norway. Investors include Dragonfly Capital, Coatue, and Multicoin Capital, with a last known valuation of $1 billion from the February 2022 Series B.
How much funding has Dune Analytics raised?
Dune raised a $2 million seed round in September 2020, an $8 million Series A in 2021, and a $69.42 million Series B led by Coatue in February 2022 at a $1 billion valuation. No new round has been reported since, as of mid 2026.
