The call

Duolingo keeps growing users and revenue while folding AI into its own courses, even as inference costs and a late-June DAU wobble put its margins and momentum under closer watch.

Duolingo makes money by getting people to learn languages through mobile games and lessons, then charges some of them for premium features. The company got users cheaply ($1 to $2 per person vs. competitors spending $5 or more) and built habits through gamification and a real English test that schools recognize. Right now, ChatGPT and Google Gemini could let people learn languages through simple voice conversations for free, and Duolingo's profit margins are shrinking because the AI features that keep users engaged also cost money to run. The one thing that matters most: whether daily active users keep growing or start flat-lining, and whether the company can shrink those AI costs without making the app worse.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT and Google Gemini voice tutors. Free AI chat and voice tutors can mimic basic practice, but Duolingo is folding AI into its own courses and Video Call feature instead of losing users to it. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No major tech company has shipped a named, integrated language-learning product that visibly pulls users away from Duolingo yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Cheap signup costs near $1 to $2, gamified habit loops, 137M monthly users' behavioral data, and school/visa recognition of its English test.
What would change this call
Duolingo's Q2 2026 earnings on August 5, 2026 report DAU trend versus late-June deceleration. Shows whether the engagement wobble was temporary noise or a real slowdown in core usage.
Gross margin print for Q4 2026 versus the ~69% trajectory tied to AI inference costs. Confirms whether AI costs are structurally compressing profitability as projected.
Paid subscriber growth rate in upcoming quarters relative to DAU growth rate. Would reveal if free ambient AI tools are eroding the premium subscription value proposition.

Questions people ask
Is Duolingo profitable in 2026?
Yes on an adjusted basis: Q1 2026 Adjusted EBITDA margin was 28.6% ($83.4M) on revenue of $291.97M, up 27% YoY. Management guided FY2026 Adjusted EBITDA margin down to ~25.7% as it calls 2026 a 'strategic investment year' prioritizing DAU growth over margin, as of May 4, 2026.
Could AI replace Duolingo?
Unlikely so far. Duolingo grew DAUs 21% YoY to 56.5M in Q1 2026 despite two-plus years of free ChatGPT and Gemini voice tutoring availability. It uses AI to feed its product (148 AI-generated courses in April 2025, Video Call, Roleplay) rather than being displaced by it, though gross margin is being taxed by inference costs.
Is Duolingo laying off employees?
No mass layoffs of full-time staff have occurred. Duolingo reported ~900 full-time employees as of December 31, 2025, up ~8.4% YoY. The company has instead reduced its contractor workforce since 2024, shifting course creation and translation work to AI tools, per CEO statements in August 2025.
Who is Duolingo's biggest competitor?
No single dominant rival exists in language learning; Babbel, Busuu (owned by Chegg), Rosetta Stone (owned by IXL Learning), and Memrise are smaller legacy players. The bigger emerging threat is ambient free AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini being used informally for language practice since 2023.
Who owns Duolingo?
Duolingo is a public company (Nasdaq: DUOL) founded by Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker, IPO'd July 2021. As of late 2024 filings, top institutional holders were Vanguard (~9.1%) and Baillie Gifford (~8.6%). It has ~46.6M shares outstanding as of mid-2026 and no debt.
Why did Duolingo stock drop in 2026?
Duolingo shares fell about 14% on May 4, 2026 despite beating revenue and EPS estimates, as investors reacted to softer bookings guidance and management's deliberate margin sacrifice for user growth. A separate ~14% drop on February 27, 2026 prompted a Pomerantz Law Firm securities investigation announced March 12, 2026.
