The call

Physics Wallah is growing fast and nearly breakeven, but its stock is sliding on lock-in unlocks and unresolved faculty-pay disputes even as AI hasn't yet pulled students away.

Physics Wallah teaches science and math to Indian students preparing for entrance exams, charging about 4,000 rupees per person, far less than older competitors like BYJU's and Aakash. The old giants cannot drop their prices that low without going broke, so Physics Wallah is partly protected from them. However, it faces direct competitors at its own price point like Unacademy and Vedantu, and free AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini could eventually let students teach themselves, replacing paid tutoring altogether. The biggest risk is whether the founder's personal brand and trust can survive recent reports of unpaid teachers and lending troubles, because if that trust cracks, students will have no reason to stay loyal.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT/Gemini-style AI tutors. Free AI tutors could substitute for paid coaching, but so far PW uses AI to cut its own costs faster than students switch away. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Unacademy, Vedantu, Adda247. Peers fight PW in the same low-price tier; none has taken visible share yet and Unacademy is shrinking. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Founder-led brand trust plus a huge low-cost YouTube-to-app funnel that rivals can't match without wrecking their own margins.
What would change this call
Physics Wallah's paid-user growth rate and ARPU in FY27 quarterly filings. Falling users or ARPU would signal AI tutors substituting for enrollment rather than just cutting costs.
Resolution of faculty unpaid-dues allegations and NBFC (FinZ Finance) strategy decision. Escalation to legal dispute or media crisis would crack founder-brand trust that anchors its moat.
Q1 FY27 and subsequent earnings showing EBITDA margin above 20% without net-loss recurrence. Sustained margin improvement would confirm profitability inflection is durable, not one-off.

Questions people ask
Is Physics Wallah profitable in 2026?
Nearly. FY26 (ended March 2026) net loss narrowed to ₹24 crore from ₹243 crore in FY25, on revenue of ₹3,900 crore (+35% YoY) and EBITDA margin that doubled to 14.1% from 6.7%, per July 21 2026 results.
Could AI replace Physics Wallah's tutoring?
Physics Wallah says AI already resolves over 90% of student doubts via its Ask AI tool (company claim, June 2026) but frames this as a cost tailwind, not a threat, crediting AI automation for its FY26 EBITDA margin expansion to 14.1%.
Who owns Physics Wallah?
Physicswallah Limited went public on NSE/BSE on November 18 2025, raising about ₹34.8 billion (~$393M). Founders Alakh Pandey and Prateek Boob held roughly 80-82% pre-IPO; WestBridge Capital is a major backer from a 2025 secondary round at $3.7B valuation.
Is Physics Wallah's stock a safe investment right now?
It has been volatile: down about 28% over the trailing 12 months and 15% YTD as of July 22 2026, trading ₹112-134 within a 52-week range of ₹77.75-₹162.05, pressured by a May 2026 lock-in unlock that freed about 9% of equity.
Who is Physics Wallah's biggest competitor?
Unacademy, Vedantu, and Adda247 compete directly in Physics Wallah's low-price online test-prep tier, though none has visibly taken share as of 2026. Legacy players like BYJU'S/Aakash and Allen can't match PW's ~₹4,000 pricing without wrecking their own margins.
Is it risky to work at Physics Wallah?
Some risk exists: MediaNama reported allegations of unpaid faculty salaries and inconsistent severance ahead of the November 2025 IPO (October 7 2025), and third-party headcount estimates for the company vary wildly, from about 15,678 to 34,048 employees in 2025-2026.
