Eavor Technologies
Canadian developer of closed-loop geothermal power plants using sealed underground pipes.
Eavor proved its closed-loop tech can deliver grid power, but its flagship plant is far behind plan while Fervo, its EGS rival, is already public and locked into hyperscaler deals.
Eavor Technologies drills sealed pipes deep underground to tap heat for electricity, using new sealing materials and magnetic sensors no one else has patented yet. Their first real test plant in Germany was supposed to make 8.2 megawatts but only made 0.5 megawatts, cost way more than planned, and the company is scrambling to raise money just to finish it. Fervo Energy, a competitor using a different underground heating method, already went public, has billions in contracts from Google and other tech giants, and is backed by oil companies, which makes Eavor look like it is losing the race. The one thing that matters next: whether Eavor can prove their second test loop works well and whether they can convince investors to fund the next phase, which will happen in the next 6 to 12 months.
Eavor announces new funding round or partner within 6-12 months. Shows whether Eavor can secure runway to finish its flagship plant.
Fervo Energy signs additional hyperscaler offtake or backlog growth post-IPO. Shows EGS rival pulling further ahead in securing data-center customers.
- Geretsried Loop 1 output ~0.5 MW vs 8.2 MW target
- Fervo contracted backlog: $7.2B
- Fervo Series E: $462M with Google as investor
- Flagship Geretsried plant delivered only ~6% of target output after cement/borehole drilling failures.
- Company is actively fundraising just to complete its single demonstration plant, runway uncertain.
- Rival Fervo Energy has pulled far ahead in financing, IPO, and hyperscaler offtake as of May 2026.
- Headcount growth has stalled with only one open role and reported YoY decline as of June 2026.
- Recent CEO transition (June to October 2025) could disrupt strategic continuity during a critical execution phase.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Fervo Energy | losing to | Fervo IPO'd Nasdaq May 13, 2026 at ~$7.65B with $7.2B backlog while Eavor still fundraises for one demo plant |
| Fervo Energy | losing to | Fervo secured Google offtake/investment Dec 2025; Eavor has no comparable hyperscaler deal as of mid-2026 |
| Quaise Energy | contesting | Competing ultra-deep drilling approach for advanced geothermal, per PitchBook company profile |
| Oil and gas majors (Chevron, Devon Energy) | contesting | Devon Energy is a Fervo investor; majors' drilling expertise could narrow Eavor's IP moat |
- Is Eavor Technologies profitable in 2026?
- No. Eavor is pre-revenue at commercial scale. Its flagship Geretsried, Germany plant delivered only about 0.5 MW versus an 8.2 MW target as of January 2026, roughly 6% of plan, with costs exceeding the stated 200-350 million euro budget, per CleanTechnica, January 15, 2026.
- Who is Eavor Technologies' biggest competitor?
- Fervo Energy, an enhanced geothermal (fracking-based) developer that IPO'd on Nasdaq on May 13, 2026 at roughly a 7.65 billion dollar valuation with a 7.2 billion dollar contracted backlog and Google as an investor, far outpacing Eavor's private, fundraising-stage status.
- Could AI replace what Eavor Technologies does?
- No. Eavor's business is physical subsurface drilling and engineering, including proprietary Rock-Pipe sealant and Eavor-Link magnetic ranging tech. AI is instead a demand-side tailwind, as data centers seek clean baseload power, not a substitution threat to its drilling operations.
- Who owns Eavor Technologies?
- Eavor remains privately held, backed by investors including Temasek, BP Ventures, OMV, Chubu Electric, Canada Growth Fund (C$90M in 2023 plus up to C$138M more by June 2025), and a 91.6 million euro EU Innovation Fund grant awarded in 2023.
- What went wrong at Eavor's Geretsried geothermal project?
- Borehole-stability and cement-integrity problems caused stuck pipe and re-drilling of a lateral, forcing a switch from parallel to single-rig drilling that roughly doubled time and cost for Loop 1, per GeoExpro, May 15, 2026. Output reached only about 6% of the original target.
- Did Eavor Technologies have layoffs?
- No formal layoffs are reported, but hiring has stalled. Crustdata tracked headcount growth from 31 (Dec 2020) to 79 (June 2026), but flagged a 23% year-over-year decline and just one open role as of mid-2026, signaling a hiring freeze rather than active layoffs.
