The call

Elastic's biggest accounts keep expanding spend and backlog, but growth is cooling as free forks and larger rivals fight for the same budget.

Elastic builds search engines and log analysis tools that large enterprises pay millions of dollars per year to use, and many of these customers are locked in because switching would be expensive and disruptive. However, the company is getting squeezed from multiple sides: Amazon Web Services offers a free version called OpenSearch that does similar work, Datadog and Splunk have their own entrenched customers, and artificial intelligence is making basic log search features cheaper and more common across all cloud providers. The real question is whether Elastic's most expensive customers will stay loyal and keep paying more each year, especially after the company laid off 7% of its workforce and lost its chief product officer in mid-2026, which signals internal trouble during a period when growth is already slowing.

Why
01
AI pressure: AWS OpenSearch (free Elasticsearch fork) and hyperscaler AI-bundled search tools. AWS OpenSearch and cloud AI search tools commoditize log search and vector search, work Elastic charges for. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Datadog, Splunk (Cisco), and Microsoft Sentinel. Datadog (13x Elastic's market cap), Splunk under Cisco, and Microsoft Sentinel all chase the same security and ops budget with more scale. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Big accounts are wired into Elastic's workflows: $1M+ ACV customers keep growing and total RPO is up 28% to $1.98B.

Questions people ask
Is Elastic profitable in 2026?
Yes. Elastic reported Q4 FY26 non-GAAP EPS of $0.61 (up 29.8% YoY, beating consensus by 8.9%) and FY2026 total revenue of $1.739 billion, up 17% YoY, as of April 30, 2026, per its May 28, 2026 earnings release.
Did Elastic have layoffs in 2026?
Yes. On June 24, 2026, Elastic disclosed in an SEC filing a plan to cut about 7% of its workforce as part of a reorganization, incurring $22-25 million in severance charges. Chief Product Officer Ken Exner resigned effective July 17, 2026, concurrent with the announcement.
Who is Elastic's biggest competitor?
Datadog, with a market cap around $85.3 billion versus Elastic's roughly $6.4 billion as of July 20, 2026, and AWS OpenSearch, a free fork of Elasticsearch with tens of thousands of users versus Elastic's own claimed 20,000+ paying subscribers as of March 2026.
Could AI replace Elastic's products?
Generic log search and first-line SIEM triage are commoditizing via AI, per Elastic's own May 2026 earnings commentary on faster technical buyer sales cycles, but Elastic shipped MCP Apps in April 2026 to embed itself as AI-agent infrastructure rather than be disintermediated.
Is Elastic stock down in 2026?
Yes. Elastic shares fell 8.7% in a single day on June 25, 2026 (from about $58.71 to $53.60) after disclosing a 7% workforce cut and CPO resignation; the stock's 52-week range was $42.05-$96.07 versus an all-time high of $189.84 as of July 20, 2026.
Who owns Elastic?
Elastic N.V. is publicly traded on the NYSE under ticker ESTC with no parent company; CEO is Ashutosh Kulkarni, board chairman is Chetan Puttagunta, and co-founder Shay Banon remains a director and CTO, per WSJ data as of March 2026.
