The call

EOS has real NATO and Middle East contracts and a growing backlog, but it's converting orders to cash slower than bigger rivals like Kongsberg and Anduril are scaling.

Electro Optic Systems makes sensor and drone-detection equipment for governments and militaries. It is hard to replace because Australia controls its manufacturing and export rules protect certain sales to the home government, plus its equipment has real battle experience. However, much larger companies like Kongsberg and Anduril are winning bigger contracts globally and deploying their systems faster in places like Poland and the United States, while EOS is still losing money overall. The company claims it has a huge backlog of orders, but only 60 to 80 percent of those orders are likely to turn into actual revenue in the next two years, and if that conversion fails or the larger rivals keep winning the biggest international deals, EOS will struggle to justify its valuation or reach profitability.

Why
01
AI pressure: Anduril Lattice/Pulsar autonomous detection and targeting software. Anduril's AI-driven Lattice system is fielded with US units, competing for the same counter-drone budgets EOS is chasing. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Kongsberg. Kongsberg's NOK 16bn Poland deal and weapon stations in 31 nations show a much bigger rival already winning large counter-drone and remote weapon contracts. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Sovereign Australian manufacturing status, export-controlled hardware, and NATO-proven laser and Slinger contracts keep EOS inside allied supply chains Kongsberg and Anduril can't easily replace.

Questions people ask
Is Electro Optic Systems profitable in 2026?
Not on an underlying basis. FY2025 NPAT was A$17.5m, but that included a one-off ~A$91m gain from selling EM Solutions in January 2025. Underlying EBITDA was still negative at roughly -A$24.4m, reported February 2026.
Who is Electro Optic Systems' biggest competitor?
Kongsberg and Anduril. Kongsberg has delivered 25,000+ weapon stations to 31 nations and won a NOK 16bn Polish counter-UAS contract in July 2026. Anduril fielded its Lattice/Pulsar system with the Washington National Guard that same month.
Could AI replace Electro Optic Systems' products?
No. EOS makes physical remote weapon systems and high-energy lasers requiring manufacturing and export licensing. It is instead adding AI via its MARSS acquisition (completed May 21, 2026), whose NiDAR software adds AI-enabled decision-making to EOS hardware rather than replacing it.
Is Electro Optic Systems a safe company to join in 2026?
Headcount fell to 436 by December 31, 2025, down 12.1% year over year, before the MARSS acquisition closed May 21, 2026. Underlying EBITDA remains negative and order-to-revenue conversion is unproven, though the order book and new contracts are growing fast.
What is Electro Optic Systems' order backlog in 2026?
EOS reported an illustrative order backlog of about A$726m as of May 18, 2026, up from A$459m in December 2025 (a 238% year-over-year jump), after folding in roughly A$217m of contracts from the newly acquired MARSS business.
Who owns Electro Optic Systems?
EOS is publicly listed on the ASX under ticker EOS with no single controlling parent. Dr Andreas Schwer is CEO/Managing Director and Garry Hounsell is Chairman, per company filings dated March 13, 2026.
