The call

Enova keeps growing on its own underwriting data and licenses, with the Grasshopper bank purchase as the swing factor for cheaper funding rather than for survival.

Enova lends money to people with bad credit, using computer models built from two decades of loan records to decide who gets money and at what price. Big banks mostly avoid this business because of state rules and because Enova already knows which customers pay back loans, making it hard for others to compete. The main threat is companies like Upstart that sell AI decision-making tools to other lenders, which could let those lenders copy Enova's approach faster. The one thing to watch: whether the government approves Enova's plan to buy Grasshopper Bank in 2026, since 20 state officials and consumer groups are fighting it, and approval or rejection could either unlock new growth or leave the company stuck where it is now.

Why
01
AI pressure: Upstart. Upstart sells AI underwriting to banks directly, which could let lenders skip Enova's decisioning and pricing layer over time. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. High-APR subprime lending carries regulatory and reputational costs that keep large banks from competing here directly. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Two decades of proprietary repayment data across risky borrowers, plus state lending licenses that take years to replicate.

Questions people ask
Is Enova International profitable in 2026?
Yes. Enova reported Q1 2026 revenue of $875.1M (up 17.4% YoY), diluted EPS of $3.46 (up 29%), and adjusted EPS of $3.87 (up 30%), with loan originations up 33% YoY, as of March 31, 2026.
Who owns Enova International?
Enova International is publicly traded on the NYSE under ticker ENVA with no controlling parent, having spun off from Cash America International in 2014. Its market capitalization was roughly $5.7 to $5.9 billion as of July 21, 2026.
Could AI replace Enova International?
Unlikely soon. Enova is itself AI-native: its Colossus platform, per company claims, analyzes over 100 terabytes of proprietary loan data and drives about 90% of lending decisions as of June 30, 2026, a moat external AI vendors cannot easily replicate.
Who is Enova International's biggest competitor?
Direct nonprime lending rivals include OppFi, Oportun, and CURO Group. A different threat is Upstart, whose AI-underwriting-as-a-service model could commoditize the credit-decisioning layer Enova sells to bank partners, per 2026 competitive analysis.
Will Enova's Grasshopper Bank acquisition close?
It's pending OCC and Federal Reserve approval, expected in H2 2026, but on July 17, 2026, 20 state attorneys general led by Illinois AG Kwame Raoul urged regulators to reject it, alleging it evades state usury caps.
Has Enova International had regulatory trouble?
Yes. The CFPB fined Enova $15 million under a 2023 consent order, which was terminated September 2, 2025 after Enova completed redress; 442 CFPB complaints were filed against the company between February 2025 and February 2026.
