The call

Enpal leads German residential solar on scale and licensing, but a cash rich rival is attacking head on while debt-funded growth meets a wobbly demand cycle.

Enpal installs solar panels on German homes and leases them to customers for 20 years, keeping the electricity revenue. It is hard to copy because Enpal has thousands of locked-in contracts, trained installers, and government permission to read meters, but 1Komma5° is a rival company with similar size and funding ($1 billion raised) attacking the same customers with the same business model. The biggest risk is whether Enpal can keep growing fast enough to pay back its $1.1 billion in debt if 1Komma5° captures too many new customers before its own public stock offering in 2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI tools help Enpal size systems and route installers, but no AI product is selling solar leases to German homeowners yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: 1Komma5°. 1Komma5° raised roughly €1B and is running a stated frontal attack on Enpal's core lease-and-install business after merger talks failed. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A large installed base under long-term lease contracts, its own metering-operator license, and a trained installer network competitors would need years to copy.
What would change this call
1Komma5° completes a 2026 IPO and reports installed-base or revenue growth vs Enpal. Would show the funded rival is converting capital into real market share gains.
Enpal renews or expands its asset-backed leasing credit facilities in 2026-27 without worse terms. Would show debt-dependent model remains financeable despite tighter credit conditions.
Enpal's 2025-2026 revenue stays above the 2023 peak (~€900M) rather than reverting to 2024's decline. Would show demand rebound is durable rather than a temporary energy-price-driven blip.
Key numbers
  • 2024 revenue €860M, down from €900-905M in 2023 (2024)
  • Over 85,000-100,000 systems installed (2025)
  • €1.1B in debt commitments raised (2024-03-21)
Named risks
  • Well-funded rival 1Komma5° explicitly targeting Enpal's core business with ~EUR 1B war chest. Severity: high
  • Heavy dependence on large structured debt facilities (EUR 1.1B plus prior raises) for financing leases. Severity: medium
  • German solar demand volatility tied to energy prices, rates and policy, with growth collapsing from 214% to 6.66%. Severity: medium
  • Sector-wide distress among peers (EKD collapse, Zolar cuts) signals possible contagion risk to financing and investor sentiment. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Enpal profitable in 2026?
Enpal first turned profitable in 2022 on €415M revenue, deprioritized profit in H1 2024 to fund new segments, then returned to profitability in H2 2024 even as full-year revenue fell to €860M from €900-905M in 2023, per April 2025 reporting.
Who owns Enpal and is it public?
Enpal is privately held, based in Berlin with a Dutch B.V. legal entity. Backers include TPG Rise Climate, SoftBank Vision Fund II and HV Capital. Its Series D closed January 2023, valuing it near $2.4B/€2.2B per the Wall Street Journal. No IPO has been confirmed.
Who is Enpal's biggest competitor?
1Komma5°, a Hamburg rival founded 2021 with about €520M in 2024 revenue, is Enpal's closest threat. After merger talks failed, 1Komma5° mobilized roughly €1B and announced a 'frontal attack' on Enpal's core business ahead of a planned 2026 IPO, per June 18, 2026 reporting.
Could AI replace Enpal's business?
Unlikely to replace the core. Enpal's moat is physical: an installed base of leased solar systems, a licensed metering-point operator status, and a trained installer network built through 2025. AI is used internally via its Enpal. One virtual power plant, launched with Entrix in June 2024, but rivals use similar AI tools too.
What was Enpal's revenue in 2024?
Enpal reported €860M in 2024 revenue, down from about €900-905M in 2023, reflecting a German residential solar demand slowdown; the company says it deprioritized profit for growth investment in H1 2024 and rebounded in H2 2024, per April 8, 2025 reporting.
Will 1Komma5° take market share from Enpal?
1Komma5° raised roughly €1B and publicly announced a frontal attack on Enpal's core business as of June 18, 2026, ahead of a targeted IPO, after a 2025 merger attempt between the two companies fell through, making this a live and contested rivalry.
