The call

Epiq's court-appointed administration work sits outside AI's reach, but its eDiscovery review business faces rivals giving away the same AI features for free.

Epiq Systems does two main things: it manages bankruptcy and settlement paperwork for courts (which is hard to replace because courts appoint them), and it reviews documents for lawsuits and investigations (which used to be tedious and expensive work). The problem is that Relativity and Everlaw, its biggest competitors, just added powerful AI tools and cut their prices sharply starting in late 2025, which means companies can now do document review much faster and cheaper without hiring Epiq. Epiq built its own AI tools to fight back, but they are basically wrappers around other technology, not something competitors cannot easily copy. The one thing that could save Epiq is if its court-appointed bankruptcy and settlement work grows fast enough to make up for the money it loses when legal review work shrinks, or if a buyer steps in before the squeeze gets worse.

Why
01
AI pressure: Relativity aiR and Everlaw AI Assistant. Both rivals bundled AI document review into flat pricing in Nov 2025, squeezing the billable review work Epiq's eDiscovery unit depends on. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft Purview eDiscovery and EY (via Consilio acquisition). Microsoft bundles basic eDiscovery into M365 licenses, and EY's 2024 Consilio buy shows big firms entering the space directly. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Bankruptcy claims agent and class-action settlement roles are court-appointed, giving Epiq a regulatory position AI and platforms can't easily take.
What would change this call
Independent (non-vendor) benchmark comparing Epiq's agentic platform to Relativity aiR appears. Would show whether Epiq's AI wrapper is genuinely differentiated or just pass-through.
Law firms report managed-review pricing concessions or churn to Relativity/Everlaw in 2026-2027 renewals. Would confirm eDiscovery margin compression is actually hitting Epiq's revenue.
OMERS/Harvest Partners initiate a sale process or recapitalization of Epiq. Would signal PE owners see limited standalone upside after 10-year hold.

Questions people ask
Is Epiq Systems profitable in 2026?
Epiq is private and does not disclose audited financials. Third party estimates from ZoomInfo and GlobalData put revenue around 1 billion dollars as of mid 2026, but profitability figures are not publicly disclosed by the company or verified independently.
Could AI replace Epiq Systems eDiscovery business?
Document review and privilege screening, Epiq's billable core, are being compressed by AI. Relativity bundled aiR review and privilege tools into flat per GB pricing effective November 1, 2025, and Everlaw made its AI assistant free around the same time, squeezing Epiq's service layer margin.
Who owns Epiq Systems?
Epiq has been privately held since September 30, 2016, when OMERS Private Equity and Harvest Partners acquired it for 16.50 dollars per share, about 1.0 billion dollars total value, merging it with DTI. The combined firm rebranded as Epiq in January 2018.
Is joining Epiq Systems safe right now?
Epiq shows modest hiring, 367 job postings in 2025 (+0.8% YoY per Revelio Labs, December 2025), and headcount near 8,640. But it faces AI driven pricing pressure in eDiscovery and an active federal MDL No. 3162 data breach and class action lawsuit transferred December 12, 2025.
Who is Epiq Systems biggest competitor?
Relativity is Epiq's biggest platform threat, holding roughly 24% enterprise market share and a 9.4/10 sentiment score among AmLaw 100 firms per Verified Market Research (March 11, 2026). Relativity's November 2025 bundled AI pricing directly undercuts Epiq's managed review services.
What is Epiq Systems' defensible moat against AI and competitors?
Epiq's regulated bankruptcy claims agent and class action settlement administration roles are court appointed and not easily disintermediated by AI or software platforms. Epiq claims a 100% court acceptance rate for legal noticing, as of September 2025, though this figure is vendor stated.
