The call

A 125 year old data gatekeeper with legal locks on payroll records, watching one court case that could force those locks open.

Equifax collects and sells credit information about people and businesses, and also runs a payroll data service called The Work Number. It is hard to compete with Equifax because it has exclusive contracts to get payroll information from major companies like ADP and Paychex, and the government heavily regulates who can be in this business, which AI cannot get around. The main risk is an antitrust court case that could force Equifax to share its payroll data with competitors, which would hurt profits but would not destroy the company.

Why
01
AI pressure: Plaid and open banking transaction data reaching lenders. AI-scored bank transaction data could let lenders skip credit bureau pulls, but adoption at scale is still early. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. Experian and TransUnion compete inside the same regulated oligopoly, no big tech company runs a rival credit bureau. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Exclusive payroll data feeds from ADP, Paychex, and Intuit into The Work Number, plus regulatory licensing that blocks new entrants.
What would change this call
Third Circuit ruling in Greystone Mortgage v. Equifax Workforce Solutions. Would show whether Equifax's exclusive Work Number payroll-data moat can be forced open.
CFPB rulemaking on credit data portability or open-banking decisioning adoption by major lenders. Would show whether Plaid-style transaction data displaces bureau data pulls.
Close and integration results of Círculo de Crédito acquisition in Q4 2026. Would show whether Equifax can extend its data moat internationally.

Questions people ask
Is Equifax profitable in 2026?
Yes. Equifax reported Q2 2026 net income of $183.9 million (down 4% YoY) on revenue of $1.70 billion (up 11% YoY), with adjusted EPS of $2.25, up 13% YoY, per its July 21, 2026 earnings release.
Could AI replace Equifax?
Unlikely soon. Equifax's moat is exclusive payroll data (The Work Number, fed by ADP, Paychex, Intuit) plus FCRA-mandated bureau status; AI models cannot originate this proprietary data or acquire regulatory standing as a credit reporting agency.
Who is Equifax's biggest competitor?
TransUnion and Experian, the other two of the 'Big Three' US credit bureaus. As of June 2026 analysis, TransUnion is viewed as growing faster in identity/fraud and international markets than Equifax.
Is Equifax a safe company to join in 2026?
Signs point to stability: headcount grew to roughly 14,490 to 15,000 employees in 2025 (up 2 to 6% YoY depending on source), with 1,181 active job postings in 2025, up 31.2% YoY, per Revelio Labs data from June 2026.
Who owns Equifax?
Equifax is a publicly traded company with no parent, listed on the NYSE under ticker EFX, with a market capitalization of approximately $21.4 billion as of July 21, 2026.
What is Equifax's biggest legal risk right now?
The Greystone Mortgage v. Equifax Workforce Solutions antitrust appeal, pending at the Third Circuit with active briefing as of July 2026, alleges a de facto monopoly in electronic income verification via The Work Number, which generates roughly 41 to 42% of Equifax's revenue.
