The call

Ether.fi runs the strongest LRT operation left standing, but it is the biggest fish in a category that lost three quarters of its water.

Ether.fi lets people stake their cryptocurrency with extra earning opportunities through a process called restaking, and it runs it without holding their keys directly. The core business is harder to copy than most crypto projects because it has proven it can handle emergencies smoothly (it let people take their money back quickly when others failed), but the whole restaking category has shrunk 75 to 80 percent from its peak, and one competitor (Kelp DAO) got hacked for 292 million dollars, which spooked everyone in the space. The company is betting its future on two new ideas: a credit card called Cash and loans backed by real-world assets, but these are unproven, and meanwhile the token will flood the market with new coins every month starting in 2028, which will pressure its price no matter what.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents don't yet compete for restaking deposits, but automated on-chain agents could route around any LRT including this one. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Lido. Lido dominates plain staking and could bolt on restaking if the category revives, pulling liquidity from ether.fi overnight. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deepest DeFi integration web (400+ protocols) plus proven ability to redeem 20% of TVL in 33 days without queue delays.
What would change this call
Ether.fi's TVL trend over the next two quarters versus its $1.85-3.19B mid-2026 level. Shows whether the category decline is bottoming or continuing to erode Ether.fi's lead.
Cash card active accounts crossing or missing 500K-1M within 12 months. Shows whether the non-restaking diversification bet is scaling or stalling.
Whether Ether.fi's DAO activates a fee/revenue switch for ETHFI token holders. Shows whether token value capture improves or dilution keeps outpacing protocol revenue.

  • ~10.6M ETHFI/month unlocking through 2028 (2026-03-01)
Named risks
  • Sector contagion from peer LRT/bridge exploits triggering redemption runs. Severity: high
  • TVL down 75-80% from August 2025 peak amid restaking narrative fatigue. Severity: high
  • Token dilution overhang of ~10.6M ETHFI monthly through 2028. Severity: medium
  • DAO revenue switch to ETHFI holders remains unactivated. Severity: medium
  • RWA vault and Cash card pivots are early-stage and unproven at scale. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Ether.fi profitable?
Ether.fi describes itself as profitable since inception with roughly 50, mostly technical, staff, per a job listing dated July 8, 2026. Independent aggregator revenue figures like $4.4M ARR conflict with protocol fee data, so exact profitability metrics are unverified beyond the company's own claim.
What is Ether.fi's TVL now versus its peak?
Ether.fi's TVL peaked around $12.79B on August 14, 2025, and had fallen to roughly $1.85-3.19B by June 7, 2026, a 75-80% decline reflecting sector-wide liquid restaking narrative fatigue, though it remains the category's largest protocol.
Who owns and runs Ether.fi?
Ether.fi was founded in April 2022 by Mike Silagadze (CEO) and Rok Kopp (Co-Founder, CRO), previously colleagues at ed-tech firm Top Hat. It operates as a founder-led company with a DAO governance layer via the ETHFI token and ether.fi Foundation.
Could AI replace what Ether.fi does?
Unlikely to replace core functions: Ether.fi's value rests on non-custodial validator key architecture, on-chain TVL, 400+ DeFi integrations, and Visa card partnerships, none substitutable by AI, which cannot hold cryptographic keys or capital custody. AI could automate support and fraud triage roles instead.
Who is Ether.fi's biggest competitor?
Direct liquid restaking rivals include Renzo, Kelp DAO (hit by a $292M exploit in April 2026), and Puffer Finance. Lido Finance, the dominant plain liquid-staking incumbent, is a slower but non-blocked threat that could enter restaking if the narrative recovers.
Has the ETHFI token price crashed?
Yes. As of July 20, 2026, ETHFI traded around $0.38-0.46, down more than 90% from its March 2024 all-time high of $8.53, with market cap near $448M against a 1 billion token supply cap set at its March 18, 2024 launch.
