The call

EVE Energy is growing fast in a market where CATL and BYD are growing faster and taking margin along with share.

EVE Energy makes batteries for consumer phones, electric cars, and power storage. It is a real company with 31,000 workers and has been profitable for 25 years, but two much larger rivals, CATL and BYD, control nearly two-thirds of the global market and are taking customers away from EVE by dropping prices. EVE's profits barely grew in 2025 even though sales jumped 26 percent, and profits fell 25 percent in the first half of 2026 even though sales rose 30 percent, which means EVE is being forced to cut prices and squeeze its profit margin to keep any business at all. The one thing that could help is if the U.S. government blocks imports of Chinese batteries, which could let EVE compete without such harsh price cuts, but if prices keep falling instead, EVE will be stuck in a slow decline.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI data-center demand is a tailwind for storage orders, not a threat; no AI product displaces EVE's cells. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: CATL and BYD. CATL holds ~42.7% and BYD ~18.5% of China's battery market while EVE sits at #5 with 5.8%, both gaining share. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Diversified revenue across consumer, EV, and storage cells plus a large storage order book cushions the EV price war.
What would change this call
EVE Energy Q2 2026 earnings (2026-08-21) net profit margin vs revenue growth. Shows whether the price war with CATL/BYD keeps crushing EVE's profitability.
LG Energy Solution/Tulip Innovation US ITC import-ban ruling on EVE (filed July 2026). Would show whether EVE loses US market access to rival battery makers.
Monthly CATL/BYD China EV battery share data (SNE Research/EVTANK). Further share gains by CATL or BYD would confirm EVE losing automaker contracts.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue up 26.44% but net profit up only 1.44% (2025-12-31)
  • H1 2025 revenue +30.06%, net profit fell 24.9% (2025-06-30)
  • CATL holds ~42.7% China battery share vs EVE's 5.8% (2026-06)
Named risks
  • Price war compresses net profit growth far below revenue growth, seen in FY2025 and H1 2025 results. Severity: high
  • LG Energy Solution ITC complaint could result in a US import ban on EVE cells. Severity: high
  • Hungary regulatory scrutiny of Chinese battery plants (BYD probe, CATL pollution violation) could extend to EVE's Debrecen plant. Severity: medium
  • US tariff regime instability (Section 301 tariffs 10-12.5% on ~60 countries) affects EVE exports and Mississippi JV supply chain. Severity: medium
  • HKEX secondary listing has already lapsed once and remains unresolved as of 2026-07-26. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is EVE Energy profitable in 2026?
Yes but thinly: FY2025 net profit hit RMB4.13 billion, up just 1.44% YoY, even as revenue jumped 26.44% to RMB61.47 billion (as of 2025-12-31). H1 2025 net profit had actually fallen 24.9% YoY, showing the China battery price war is squeezing margins despite strong top-line growth.
Who is EVE Energy's biggest competitor?
CATL, which held roughly 42.7% of China's EV battery market and about 40% globally as of June 2026, versus EVE's 5.84% domestic share (5th place) and 2.3-3.4% global share (8th-9th place). BYD, at 18.49% China share, is also outscaling EVE.
Could AI replace EVE Energy?
No. EVE is a physical battery manufacturer; AI is used internally, not as a substitute for its product. Its Jingmen plant runs 100% AI vision inspection at 0.3 seconds per cell (reported 2026-07-17), improving yield, but cells still require gigafactories, automaker qualification, and capital EVE alone controls.
Does EVE Energy face legal risk in the US market?
Yes. LG Energy Solution, via affiliate Tulip Innovation, filed a US ITC import-ban complaint and a Texas federal patent suit against EVE over cylindrical/tabless-cell and separator technology, announced 22-23 July 2026. The case was unresolved as of 2026-07-26 and could restrict EVE's US market access if it succeeds.
Is EVE Energy going public in Hong Kong?
It's trying to. EVE first filed for a HKEX secondary listing on 2025-06-30, that filing lapsed 2025-12-30, and it re-filed on 2026-01-02 with CITIC Securities as sole sponsor, aiming to mirror rival CATL's dual listing, which raised $5.3 billion in 2025.
How exposed is EVE Energy to China's battery price war?
Significantly. In H1 2025, revenue rose 30.06% YoY to RMB28.17 billion but net profit fell 24.9% YoY on higher costs; full-year FY2025 net profit growth of just 1.44% on 26.44% revenue growth confirms margin compression is an active, ongoing problem into 2026.
